The Royals Have Become Interesting

They've been there for hundreds of years.
Perhaps nasty catfights might inspire sending them away.

So...lucky me.
As an Australian, the Queen is our sovereign, and these...folks...are considered newsworthy.

I find the concept of Royalty vomit-worthy, and generally leave the room when one of them is on tv. Generally I've taken the 'it's not them, it the institution' line, but in some cases I am finding it is both the institution AND the people currently involved who make me nauseous.

Australia is too apathetic about such things for the Republican movement to really have much traction right now. Which also makes me nauseous.

Please for the love of God don't EVER say you find anything to do with the royals interesting. It only encourages them.

Entertainment factor is basically the only reason they're still around. If everybody just loses interest, maybe we can finally get rid of them.

You really believe that? The royal establishment exist because they are a group who know what it takes to survive and thankfully they do. I feel it is very unfair of the monarchy to disown Harry and Megan. The establishment are wrong on this pathway of harm toward themselves and Harry. If they had never taken the HRH from Diana she would be alive today because her car would have been driven by her security staff and a car before and after them would have been in the motorcade. If Harry and Megan were confirmed about their safety here the monarch the Queen should have helped them
through by doing what it takes to protect them and allow them to fulfill their duties in the representation of their charities and normal fields of work. This would not be where it is, if they had.

Pfft. This is what those royal amateurs have come up with? Just wait until Britain becomes a republic to witness the real drama.

You know, Harry and Megan -- yawn for sure. He's pretty (in my opinion), she's a social climber (a la Wallis Warfield Simpson), with not a whole lot of acting talent.

But, speaking as a Canadian, I can't help but remember that the Queen, who has no real power, can still advise her current Prime Minister. PMs come and go, but she has been there for 67 years. She has met every ruler, every important person on this entire planet. She has been devotedly reading all of the important documents her government has produced throughout her reign, and can see threads that would be invisible to the rest of the world, simply because they've not seen it all of a piece. She can remember when this or that strategy was tried, and what the result was -- and simply pass that on to her PM who has to make tough choices.

And most importantly, she can remind her nation that the PM is not a dictator -- that he reports to someone who embodies the nation. That, in my view, is symbolically very important.

And what's more, I think that she has personally personified the notion of "duty" more than anyone else on this planet. And I truly think that is something worth acknowledging, and even celebrating.

Petsonally...I am interested in royals' life. Especially if it deals with people who will rule a country a someday.
Being in a republic...politicians tend to be very discreet , when it deals with their own privacy.
I mean...our former Prime Minister had a domestic partner...but she always avoided journalists, press and photographers.
She has never joined him in formal ceremonies...we do not have the notion of First Lady (also because we will have a female PM sooner or later...and First Gentleman would sound weird):p.

Diana would probably be alive today if she wore a seatbelt - that's what comes to mind whenever she is mentioned.

I don't think i ever owed them anything but every month they took a chunk of my tax money so they could live the life their murdering ancestors had got them used to.

And no, I can't say i curtsied to anyone.
Also, and devastatingly, the third episode of The Unforgotten has been cancelled to show the Oprah Winfrey interview.

I'm livid.

Will it not be available online on itv hub?

Apparently it will be aired the following day. Just another example of the royals inconveniencing the british public

Them and the tourist money they bring in as long as they are mildly entertaining.

This is something I'd love to rant about but unfortunately it's a bit off topic and not quite fit for a discussion thread.

To be fair to Megan, at least she's worked in something
regular & recognizable (to some...not to me). That's better
than the vast majority of actors. (We have one in the family.
He's done some commercials & plays...the kind ya don't get
paid for.) Most actors will be plying a trade....not standouts
like a Linda Hunt, Daniel Day Lewis, or Margot Martindale.
