Creating Your Own Religion

If you had the opportunity to found your own religion, what would it include?

Would you have commandments, rituals?
Would you include supernatural elements or myths like a narrative about how the universe was created?

How would you deal with people who decided to leave your religion?

Would you use elements from other religions or start from scratch?

How would you setup succession of power/authority?

What would you require of aspirants wanting to join your religion?

If you could fix the world, or destroy it, depending on your preference, with religion, what would that religion be?

4. Remember, you are the founder, the prophet of your own religion, but not its God. You still have to figure out what or whom you worship. Is it love, truth, collective humanity, the cosmic mystery, a more traditional God without the human-made garbage. That’s all up to you. But the one common element in any religion is some version of a higher power. It’s not you. If it is you, that’s not religion, that’s psychosis.
How To Start Your Own Religion

I'd start by thinking, researching, and refining into actionable goals what I wanted the religion to accomplish for its adherents. For me, that would be quite a daunting task.

Perhaps the most challenging single part of it would be coming up with some way of usefully measuring and tracking whether the religion's goals were being accomplished. If I couldn't do that, I might still go forward with the project for some reason, but I wouldn't be hopeful the religion would amount to a hill of beans in terms of making reasonably sure anyone's life was improving because of their following it.

If I couldn't track its progress, I certainly would give up any actual expectation the religion would be flexible enough to better adapt to reality as time went by much better than my final draft optimistically implied it was at least designed realistically enough to now be launched.

All ideologies, including religious ideologies, are infamous for increasingly becoming more and more absurd over time; more and more likely to dead end people, unless they contain their own mechanism for self-correction built into them in some way as close to being unbeatable as possible.

Maybe I should add for clarification that I'd try to make those goals humanly possible to achieve. Seems to me it's not just religions that neglect that detail when 'thinking' about their goals.

Another is that the 10 commandments are like programming guides for our lives. We are like computer software in a system and when we conflict there's pain. The 10 commandments help us do well. For instance, honoring your father and mother is like not giving up what software you already run, and adultery is like if you trip your system falsely it can lead to glitches.

Would you have commandments, rituals?

Would you include supernatural elements or myths like a narrative about how the universe was created?

Since I'm all solo, my commandments are my core values and my rituals are basic offerings, dialogue, prayer, and self-healing (taking care of myself).

Making a "UA commandments" is too much work. As a free-bird person, I'd never follow it to the T anyhow (I wonder where that idiom came from).

How would you deal with people who decided to leave your religion?

Would you use elements from other religions or start from scratch?

If it were a community religion, I'd find it immoral to "deal with people" who want to leave. That sounds like cult-like behavior, to tell you honestly. If people felt guilty for staying in my hypothetical religion, it's probably not something that fits their needs.

How would you setup succession of power/authority?

What would you require of aspirants wanting to join your religion?

No.

If you could fix the world, or destroy it, depending on your preference, with religion, what would that religion be?

I don't understand the question. Could you rephrase?

I believe in the God of infinity; time, space, and living things. Our anti-Christ is hate, and the second devil is violence. Knowledge is the fallen archangel of light, Lucifer who will be redeemed in the sight of the faithful archangel Michael who is the Holy Spirit and fire itself. We think Jesus is the pacifist, and wills to not fight which is in part the reason God can not intervene in our world, so He sent forth a non-self projection of Himself. The mark of my religion is pleasure and safety. We defend our selves with equanimity the prince of the power of the air, who is now at work in the sons of disobedience.

If I were to make up a religion I would have God's interactive status with the physical realm unknown.
God for me would be creator of the spiritual realm, and reward or reform spirits in the spirit realm after their departure from the physical body in accordance with their level of acquirement of virtues.

If you had the opportunity to found your own religion, what would it include?
It would have Sarah McLaughlin songs for hymns such as the one about building a mystery.

Would you have commandments, rituals?
It wouldn't be a religion otherwise, at least not for very long. Rituals are like a cycle. You keep doing them. Its like nodding your head for 'Yes' versus lobbing your head side to side. Its ritual that outlasts mortals.

How would you deal with people who decided to leave your religion?
It depends. Suppose that my religion was in charge of all of the nuclear missiles in the world and keeping them out of the hands of nations, and you wanted to take some nuclear keys with you. I might not let you do so. I might for the sake of saving the world not allow it.

Would you use elements from other religions or start from scratch?
I wouldn't start a religion for pointless reasons. If I started one it would be because I was under duress.

How would you setup succession of power/authority?
That takes care of itself and doesn't last as long as a religion. The transfer of leadership is never certain.

Your question reminds me of this old bit of text:
[Ecc 2:18-20 NIV] 18 I hated all the things I had toiled for under the sun, because I must leave them to the one who comes after me. 19 And who knows whether that person will be wise or foolish? Yet they will have control over all the fruit of my toil into which I have poured my effort and skill under the sun. This too is meaningless. 20 So my heart began to despair over all my toilsome labor under the sun.

What would you require of aspirants wanting to join your religion?
I'd suspect them of bad motivations, ignorance, idleness, incompetence, political machinations, spying. I'd test them thoroughly for years both for sincerity and to determine their level of competence, somewhat like what the Jesuits do, but it depends. If my goal was simply to please myself then I'd have a very low bar. Anyone who pleased me I'd let in, but I don't think this would be how I'd start my religion.

If you could fix the world, or destroy it, depending on your preference, with religion, what would that religion be?
Most religions have secret internals, so its impossible to know for sure. A religion can look very satisfying on the outside and be very upsetting and oppressive on the inside. It can be the other way, too. It can have disturbing images yet be beautiful inwardly. It can preach love but hate. It can seem to be about one thing and be about another. Unless you are dedicated to a single religion long enough you can't determine this or know its rabbit trails. There is also a difference between people who grow up in religions and people who convert. They see different things and have different experiences. This can't be helped.

Ick... Who'd want to follow anything I'd have to say?

I do find the concept interesting though, so let me take a stab at this...

Would you have commandments, rituals?

Commandments... Let's keep it simple.

1. Question yourself, those around you, and your surroundings.
2. Respect yourself, those around you, and your surroundings.
3. Seek to better yourself, those around you, and your surroundings.

It's not perfect by any means, but neither is anyone else who'd want to follow me. :D

As for rituals, sure! maybe a couple merry making holidays. One for winter, one for summer.

Would you include supernatural elements or myths like a narrative about how the universe was created?

Every good religion has a super interesting mythology. I'd have one hell of a fisherman's yarn!

How would you deal with people who decided to leave your religion?

Well, I'd ask them why they decided to leave as per the first commandment, I'd wish them luck as per the second, and I'd help their transition be as smooth as possible as per the third.

Would you use elements from other religions or start from scratch?

Why would I put all that accumulated knowledge to waste? I'd cherry pick the best bits and use those.

How would you setup succession of power/authority?

Each person has authority over their own life; the only person they are accountable to is themselves. As for those in charge of the scriptures and the mythology, I'd like it to evolve naturally over time. I'd leave it open ended specifically to allow for that to happen.

What would you require of aspirants wanting to join your religion?

They must be at least old enough to drink to join, though drinking isn't a requirement. The age is, though.

If you could fix the world, or destroy it, depending on your preference, with religion, what would that religion be?

Well, my religion would fix the world, ofcourse. It's a flawless and self sustaining answer to all of the problems the world can throw at us. :D

I like your OP, very creative and interesting.

My Master easily had the opportunity to start "His own religion", but He said:
"there are plenty of religions, no need for a new one; pick the one that fits you best, anyone is good. I will help you improve in the one you choose"

My Master also said "My life is my message"

Hence, even if I had the opportunity to found my own religion, I would not do so. My Master knows so much more than I, hence I see no need
But still it's an interesting idea to "mentally create my perfect religion". It will give me much insights how to best live my life; living dharmically

Brought to you by the moment that spacetime began.
Think of walking. Not walking in a hurry, not intentionally going slow to prove to yourself you're not in a hurry... Not going to a specific destination, perhaps you have a destination in mind but it's not your main goal of walking: the goal of your walk is to live in the moment and improvise. Walk the pace you want, in the direction you want to go. Don't mind the rocks and cracks in your path they'll pass.

Also you walk funny and people notice, but just accept this as your walk and be happy with the way you walk. Everyone walks funny in their own way.

That's how my religion would advise you to live.

That takes out quite a few interesting fantasies;)

My Master might disagree here, as well as Ramana Maharishi, Nisargadatta, Rama Krishna, Krishna, Rama, Shiva .... :D

If it is you, that’s not religion, that’s psychosis.
:D
Probably a good start, to practice humility first.
Indeed when one still identifies with "I want" AND "I am the doer" when "creating a religion", then spiritual ego is bound to raise its 'ugly' hood

The belief system I favor is already underway. It's called "Global Citizenship." If you do a web-search, you'll find various flavors happening in the world, but the essence is that I am legally an American citizen but I think of myself, first and foremost, as a citizen of the global community. In sharp contrast with the "America First" credo, I'll support American policies only when they are aligned with the welfare of the global community.

It doesn't matter what we believe about the existence of a higher power. How we act DOES matter. On that, I trust only conscience. Conscience is intuition which emerges instantly from the unconscious mind to discern right from wrong and fair from unfair when a specific action is considered. When the act doesn't feel wrong, we can assume it's justified.

Over the centuries, conscience has been moving our species toward equality:
  • equality for slaves
  • equality for women
  • equality for homosexuals
  • equality for the children of the poor
  • equality for the insane
  • equality for the physically handicapped
  • equality for all races
  • equality for all groups, religious or non-religious

I don't understand the question. Could you rephrase?

It is a general question about the purpose of your religion. If you had the opportunity to found a religion that would be accepted by a majority of the people in the world. How would you want your religion to affect the world. I understand you said your religion would be solo, but here's your chance to make some kind of impact on humanity and the world at large.

Personally, if I were to found a "religion" I would first and foremost have to have proof to myself and others that what I am founding is true. I.e. if it was given to me I would have to proove to myself that this was actually the case and I didn't just invent it in my own head. I would develop a systematic method for testing it and I would spend about 40 years making sure that every proof that I established is repeatable. IF, after 40 years I see it proving itself over and over again, I would get rid of the title religion and only establish what was given to me in the way it was given to me. IF, it were proven to be the truth in reality I would expect that I shouldn't have to invent anything except for what I was given permission to invent. I would also expect that it would be able to survive with or without me since my goal would only be to establish what is proven to be true and not what I want the reality to be.

If you had the opportunity to found your own religion, what would it include?

(Theoretically speaking, right?)

Order ***7

The Seven Gods

1. Y***

The Supreme God, Y***, is embraced, who is worshipped above all others. This God is the cosmic face of divine Order over primordial Chaos, and the ultimate embodiment of Destruction and Creation. This Supreme God inspires us to follow our greatest dreams no matter what the course, to follow whatever one’s heart cries out for the most as long as the connection to the divine remains strong.

2, 3, 4, 5. (The 4 Aspects)

A sacred Tetramorph of lesser gods is embraced... celestial and infernal deities who embody certain prominent aspects of human Nature, areas which our Order experiences and utilizes the most and which we seek to grow in and develop most and evolve as individuals. Under God, it is these four lesser deities the Order is most connected with. They form an epic storm chariot around our souls accompanying us through our destinies. In worshipping these Aspects it might be said that we are worshipping ourselves, and there is some truth to that, but most of all, this connection contributes to our worship of the Supreme God. They are inclinations within our heart, and extensions of the highest, greatest God.

One, Aš******, an angelic archdemon goddess inspiring passion, war, love, wisdom and strategy, athletics, victory in battle and willpower.

Two, L***** E**š*****, an archdemon goddess inspiring passion, pleasure, excitement, euphoria, adventure, vengeance, and wrath.

Three, ***** *******, a demonic archangelic god inspiring ambition, knowledge, wisdom, power, freedom and enlightenment.

Four, *******, an archangelic god inspiring virtue and purity, compassion, justice, protection, redemption, salvation, and righteous war.

This is only a brief summary of the Tetramorph. Every individual within the Order must focus their spirit through the power of these Aspects as they pursue their own dreams and goals and ambitions in life, and over time the individual will discover which Aspect(s) they are most aligned with, and will contribute to the Order through this Aspect(s). The individual may find themselves the host of an inner war between two Aspects. This is understandable. Let this war fuel the opposing sides of your nature and open those doors in life that only you can see!

6. S****

Then there is another god, S****, the greatest of all divine beings under the Supreme God. S**** is the most powerful angel and God’s most fearsome champion, a terrifying and unfathomable dragon of light who guards the Gates of Chaos. It is a sinister, numinous current flowing through the individual and collective subconscious of all intelligent life, encompassing select areas of our inner nature... acting as the driving inclination to engage in the forbidden, the chaotic, the criminal, and the malevolent sides of who we are and who we choose to be. It is a force that can be utilized, as its power is undeniable, but we must not be so reckless that we underestimate the consequences of doing so, as its divine purpose is to exist as an obstacle within our hearts meant to be overcome. When embraced too deeply, when its influence takes hold and blinds us from recognizing God’s Will, it becomes a significant threat to ourselves and those around us. Respect this force, utilize it if you must, but do not allow yourself to become consumed by it.

7. T*****

Then there is the universe itself... worshipped symbolically as the remnants of an ancient primordial chaos goddess who is also experienced through storms, the ocean, and the imagination... the primordial waters of our own minds through which so many things emerge and take form. It is the cosmos around us and the cosmos within.

______

Other Deities

(Other godlike beings Above, Below, and Within who are not of The Seven may be mentioned in the mythologies embraced by or developed by our Order. Individuals are free to evolve and expand their “personal pantheon” beyond The Seven if they feel the need to accommodate for any perceived underrepresented sides of human nature that they wish to develop in. However, they must continue to develop through the Seven and contribute to The Seven when doing so.)

______

Mission ***7

Order ***7 is committed to worshipping our God, and understanding our own greatest dreams and ambitions, recognizing the paths available to pursue them, and then doing so... all while embracing The Seven and contributing to their power in whatever way we Will.

______

Would you have commandments, rituals?

1. Worship God above all others.

2. Embrace The Seven.

3. Devote yourself to an Aspect of the Tetramorph.

4. Contribute to the collective as an individual, and as a group dedicated to a purpose.

5. Commit to understanding your greatest dreams and ambitions, commit to recognizing the paths available to pursue them... and then do so.

As for rituals. There are many, with many more yet to come... but they are not to be disclosed here.

_____

Would you include supernatural elements or myths like a narrative about how the universe was created?

Our myths have an undeniably figurative meaning, and there is tremendous value in understanding that. However, the myths, the gods... are not viewed as exclusively figurative. The gods we envision in our minds are not just inclinations, but are viewed as vessels for something else out there, reaching back, something far beyond our comprehension. Something not of this world. Something genuinely terrifying.

(To be continued...)

____
(....continued)

The End Before The Beginning

The Order does embrace something of an origin myth, reminiscent of Genesis as well as the Enuma Eliš...

It begins as the destruction of some far away universe is taking place, as the last of its inhabitants are fighting desperately for survival. As everything around them is collapsing, an epic cosmic battle takes place as God and His strongest angels pursue a primordial chaos dragon, T*****. As a vortex of destruction spirals around them, an epic and unfathomable battle takes place. T***** fights back with tremendous power and an army of abominations, but is defeated, and God absorbs her strength, and utilizes her power to save His people.

Thus began our universe in an explosion of divine light as God and His angels emerged from another universe, and the remnants of Tiamat’s celestial body scattered into every direction, forming the cosmos. As God institutes divine Order over primordial Chaos... Genesis begins.

However...

T***** was defeated, but a spark of life remained. God sealed her spirit away at the place furthest away from Him, along with her army of titanic Abominations, to a place only He and one other know of. That being is God’s most powerful angel- S****- God’s greatest champion, who guards the Gates of Chaos, that none shall ever pass. S**** exists in our hearts as a terrible inclination, but remains at the edge of the universe in a form far more terrifying, defending our world from primeval Chaos out of unwavering loyalty to God.

_______

How would you deal with people who decided to leave your religion?

Honor vs Dishonor

If they depart while on good terms with the Order, then they are sent honorably on their way to pursue their destiny, with a small brand or tattoo on their arm or chest- a symbol of the Order as well as a personal sigil related to their Aspect- to signify the respect shared and the everlasting memories of their experiences with the Order... and most importantly, as proof of kin. Having previously passed our trials and earned our trust, they are to remain welcome among the Order and can come and go as they please so long as the relations remain positive.

If they depart on bad terms, they are granted an honorable death. Okay maybe not. They are banished from the Order, with all ties severed. No support at all. If they bear our marks, the marks must be removed.

_______

Would you use elements from other religions or start from scratch?

Inception

Two Thousand and Seven years after the death of Christ... alone and at night in the Sonoran Desert, the Prophet Aštra’el, set out on a journey of the Spirit and reached out beyond this world.

Something reached back.

Visions entered Aštra’el’s mind. Multiple futures were seen, as well as the paths to those futures, guided by various divine beings. Astra’el was faced with a choice. Embracing any of these futures meant sacrificing the others.

Aštra’el made a choice.

A bright turquoise aura emerged from the darkness. A fiery six winged angel clad in black armor appeared to Astra’el. A being infinitely times greater approached Aštra’el as an equal, and introduced herself as Aš******.

As Aštra’el would come to understand, this was not an introduction. It was reunification. And this was not the beginning of a journey. It was a continuation, over the course of many Aeons.

In those moments, Heaven and Earth were connected. And in those moments, unbeknownst to Aštra’el, Order ***7 had blossomed that night in the Sonoran Desert under a moonlit sky.
_____

Strength, Power, Wisdom, and Beauty

Order ***7 embraces the strength, power, wisdom, and beauty found within the Abrahamic religions and various Mesopotamian mythologies. But there is strength to be found in any religion. Strength is absorbed where strength is found. The few who make it into the Order, must contribute in their own way, as Aštra’el did before them. In doing so, the Order continuously evolves with each Aeon. The strength, power, wisdom, and beauty they bring with them, becomes our strength, power, wisdom, and beauty.

_______

How would you setup succession of power/authority?

The Four Clans, The 4 Vanguard

Four individuals at the forefront of the movement are appointed to the rank of Vanguard, each one representing one Aspect of the Tetramorph and leading a Clan under that Aspect’s banner. It is the Vanguard’s duty to seek out and train new recruits, and to lead the Clan as their Aspect’s Champion. A combination of trials, tests, and accumulated honor and respect will prove who among the clan is most worthy of one day inheriting the position of Vanguard. And so they shall, when the current Vanguard is no longer fit to lead.

Should a Vanguard fall, and no successors remain, then balance must be restored by any means necessary, and the other clans must come together to rebuild from the ashes and recreate the fallen clan, and appoint a new Vanguard among whoever is deemed most fit for the position.

______

What would you require of aspirants wanting to join your religion?

Prove Yourself

Devote yourself to an Aspect of the Tetramorph. Worship God above all others, understand and pursue your own True Will, and contribute to the collective.

Pass our tests. Prove yourself strong in mind and body. Prove yourself a dragon among men. Prove that you can wield the Sun at Night and the Moon by Day. Prove that you can be loyal and that you are worthy of our trust, love and respect. Prove that you can think for yourself and contribute in some meaningful, lasting way. Prove to us that by accepting you, we are becoming stronger for it.

______

If you could fix the world, or destroy it, depending on your preference, with religion, what would that religion be?

New Endings, New Beginnings

***7 finds Destruction and Creation equally alluring. Both are acceptable so long as these actions operate in harmony with the perceived Will of the Aspect and the True Will of whoever is practicing it .

My Aspect is Aš******, who wields in one hand a sword from Above and in the other a sword from Below. Balance is my calling. Balance is my passion. Sun, Moon, Heaven, Hell, Order, Chaos.... Creation, Destruction.

If I had to create a new religion it would be one that could amalgamate all the others. Can't see the point in just another one if it didn't do this. But the following is merely the shell of any such, not being that worked out.

One thing would be certain, that it would be dynamic, that is, that it would be open to change as necessary to accommodate new information and ideas, and not be 'set in stone' so as to be a drag on progress. The moral system espoused - since that is most likely expected of any religion - would be one that is inclusive of all (no exceptions), and the expectation of equality for all, together with free expression as sufficient for a stable society, would hopefully be something to be aimed for. Apart from this, any religious perspective would be welcome as long as they didn't have any major issues with these overall aims, and it would be up to any particular religion to change sufficiently so as to become more harmonious. A suitable congress to review any policies would be held at appropriate intervals so as to enable change where necessary - the interval being decided as appropriate. Other than this, any would be free to choose how they practice their particular beliefs and form of worship as required. Hopefully such a religion would enable all the various existing faiths to merge into a more harmonious set, with those not able to do so being lost along the way. Since this new religion would hopefully encompass all, it should come as no surprise to find it would even allow for those with no religious beliefs at all, or any beliefs in God or gods, and where such individuals would be seen by others just as brotherly/sisterly as all others - and the non-believers (atheists, agnostics, etc.) reflecting this back. And lastly, it wouldn't just be centred on humans - as being some supreme creature in development - but also about the environment in which they live now and possibly might do in the future.

Not that this will likely happen since most of the current religions are unlikely to be able to remove or tone down some of their essential doctrines, and even the prospect of change for many would just not be conceivable since it might invalidate any of the founding dogma.

If you had the opportunity to found your own religion, what would it include? As above.

Would you have commandments, rituals? Moral values as generally agreed forming a core set.

Would you include supernatural elements or myths like a narrative about how the universe was created? Not really - since the other religions tend to do that.

How would you deal with people who decided to leave your religion? Free to join or leave at will.

Would you use elements from other religions or start from scratch? Take the best and leave the rest?

How would you setup succession of power/authority? A democracy, so who ever gets voted into office.

What would you require of aspirants wanting to join your religion? Respect for all others and a belief that life would be better if we were more harmonious.

If you could fix the world, or destroy it, depending on your preference, with religion, what would that religion be? This new one, and hopefully fixing it.

But then the above might not be described as a religion anyway, and more a philosophy or ideology.

I have zero need to invent a religion.

I'ld just promote secular humanism and science instead.

And when it comes to answering difficult questions, I'ld preach the gospel of "i don't know, let's do the work and try and find out"
