Why do so few people keep the seventh day Sabbath?

Hi blü 2. Good afternoon. I would have to disagree. The 10 commandments are excellent commandments, but only if they are taken as a whole.
I respectfully but strongly disagree. Overall its failure to state principles is its most vivid failure. Each reader has to invent for himself or herself what "murder", or "lawful homicide" and "unlawful homicide" mean, words whose definitions across state and world jurisdictions vary widely, and are affected by the allowable defenses and mitigations.
If all kept the 10 commandments, society would recover quickly from it’s moral degradation.
Doesn't work in modern Israel, doesn't work in the USA, still the most bible-influenced nation in the First World. I suggest that if all personal, governmental and commercial relations were governed by express principles requiring decency, respect and inclusion, fairness and reciprocity, emphasis on education and equal opportunity, we might get somewhere. But in the real world that's probably as much pie in the sky as yours is.
Whereas the first four to five commandments concentrate on properly worshipping Yahweh
It's essential that people should be free to form their own views regarding religion. Living in someone else's theocracy is a particular form of hell.

Hi PruePhillip. Do you remember when Yahshua was asked by the young man what good thing he should do to receive eternal life, and do you remember Yahshua's response? He began quoting from the Laws in the Bible, some of which came from the 10 commandments: "And behold, one came to him and said, Teacher, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? 17 And he said unto him, Why askest thou me concerning that which is good? One there is who is good: but if thou wouldest enter into life, keep the commandments. 18 He saith unto him, Which? And Yahshua said, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, 19 Honor thy father and thy mother; and, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself." (Matthew 19)

Yahshua's instruction was perfect and the sermon on the mount shows the perfect character that we should attain to, but that character cannot be obtained without keeping the commandments. The Holy Spirit is a Spirit that works within the confines of the Law as Galatians 5:22-23 shows.

This is how Jesus saw the Commandment, "Thou shalt not commit adultery"
You shall not even look upon a woman in lust.
Now was Jesus preaching the Commandments?

I would like to believe that most people consider the 10 commandments to be a foundation to which they can base their faith
Most Christians consider the faith of Christ to be the foundation of our faith.

I wonder if more people kept the Sabbath Day whether there would be less faithlessness as keeping the Sabbath in a sanctified way is a witness that you are accepting that Yahweh created and rejects the theory of evolution
A lot of people do keep Sabbath. And a lot of Christians follow the science of our origins, rather than mistreat the creation myths with a literalistic reading.

Why even those who keep a Sabbath Day in Chr-stianity have come up with the idea of a “Chr-stian Sabbath” being Sunday
Yup. That’s because our Sabbath is a celebration of God’s new creation: the Resurrection.

even though this is never found in the Bible.
Most Christians do not subscribe to the heresy of sola scriptura.

Sabbath kept correctly is from Friday night sundown to Saturday night sundown
...for Jews.

We cannot buy and sell on the Sabbath Day
We can.

Also we are not do our own pleasure on the Sabbath (Isaiah 58:12-13) such as playing sports or watching television.
We can.

Do you really think Yahweh would abandon the Sabbath Day when it has so many benefits for the human body and mind?
In what way does the different observance by a different religion constitute “God abandoning the Sabbath?”

Why don’t you try start keeping the Sabbath?
Why don’t you stop proselytizing?

Look I'm only an atheist, but isn't one of the 10 Commandments...

  • Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.

So shouldn't Christians be observing it?
No. Not particularly. We’re not Jews. According to our observance, the Sabbath is a celebration of the new creation, which is the Resurrection event. therefore, we Sabbath on the first day of the week, not the seventh.

I don't care which day it is on Saturday, Sunday or Monday or whatever - One of the commandments is Observe the sabbath and keep it holy or words to that effect.

Christians aren’t specifically beholden to the Ten Commandments.

I find it truly amazing that anyone thinks the sabbath can be bought and sold. God is not for sale. Only Satan would have such ungodly ideas. Just shows how much influence Satan has on people who call themselves Christian. Sad.

I would like to believe that most people consider the 10 commandments to be a foundation to which they can base their faith, but I wonder why, if the 10 commandments are so widely known, why so few people keep the Sabbath Day. This fourth commandment stands out amongst the rest because it probably has the most text associated with it. In the 10 commandments, Yahweh has said that such a day is a reminder that Yahweh created all things in this world, including things outside this world, within 6 literal days and rested on the 7th. I wonder if more people kept the Sabbath Day whether there would be less faithlessness as keeping the Sabbath in a sanctified way is a witness that you are accepting that Yahweh created and rejects the theory of evolution. Why even those who keep a Sabbath Day in Chr-stianity have come up with the idea of a “Chr-stian Sabbath” being Sunday, even though this is never found in the Bible.

Sabbath kept correctly is from Friday night sundown to Saturday night sundown (Leviticus 23:32 and Mark 1:32). We cannot buy and sell on the Sabbath Day (Jeremiah 17:19-27 & Nehemiah 13:15-22). Also we are not do our own pleasure on the Sabbath (Isaiah 58:12-13) such as playing sports or watching television.

The Sabbath Day when observed correctly is indeed the best day of the week. It allows us to reflect and study the Word, sing spiritual songs and meditate on the direction of our lives. The Sabbath should ensue a holy convocation (Leviticus 23:3) and allow us to recuperate and rest each week.

The science would support that a day of rest is very beneficial. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) reports in a CDC publication that stress levels at work at higher than ever and that "health care expenditures are nearly 50% greater for workers who report high levels of stress."

A did a quick search online and the first site that came up with scientific reasons supporting a weekly resting day was Inc.com which lists the following scientific reasons that support a day of rest:

1. Time out reduces stress.

2. Getting away from work boosts your immune system.

3. Speaking of sleep, you'll do it better during time out of work.

4. Taking regular time away from work restores mental energy.

5. When you take out time for yourself, you're more creative.

6. You're also more productive when you take time out from work.

7. You'll focus better at work if you take your weekly rejuvenation time.

8. Your day off improve short-term memory.

Listening to all these reasons I’m reminded of Deuteronomy 6:24, that the commandments are for our good always, that he might preserve us alive.

Do you really think Yahweh would abandon the Sabbath Day when it has so many benefits for the human body and mind? I’ve just kept another Sabbath Day today – it ended this evening – and I can say having never taken a day off work for any physical illness that Yahweh’s Laws are good. Why don’t you try start keeping the Sabbath? In the Bible it is said to serve as a sign between Yahweh and His people and it still remains (Hebrew 4:9) in to our era and will be kept in the Kingdom.

I believe the law in the Old Testament was a shadow of things that would be spiritual in the New Covenant. God created things and then rested on the Seventh day. Under the Old Covenant God required his people to keep a natural Sabbath day of rest. The Sabbath day of rest in the Old Testament represented the eternal Sabbath day of rest that awaits God's people in the New Covenant. We call that eternal day of rest - Heaven.

Who’s talking about buying and selling? This is a straw man argument. The disciples in the Bible celebrated the Eucharist separately from their synagogue worship — on the first day of the week. The disciples — who spoke for Jesus — transferred the Sabbath observance to the first day, in order to honor God’s new creation.

And yet, the very scriptures declares that "there remaineth therefor a sabbath rest for the people" saying that the regular Sabbath didn't accomplish it.

And the Pharisee Paul said it was just a shadow of things to come and therefore we no longer judge whether or not we observe the Sabbath or Holy days. I think, as a Jewish person, he would understand it better than us.

Hi Ken. Good evening. Perhaps we will have to agree to disagree but as I explained to another, Colossians 2:16-18 does not teach that we shouldn't be keeping the holy days. It says:
"16 Let no man judge you therefore in meat, or in drink, or in respect of a feast day, or a new moon, or a sabbath: 17 which are a shadow of things to come; but the body of the Messiah."

It's saying that we shouldn't let *man* judge us, especially those outside the assembly (or the Body of the Messiah) regarding keeping these holy days. Only Yahweh and Yahshua should be able to judge us through His Word and Yahshua was emphatic that he didn't come to do away with the law in Matthew 5:17.

The very fact that Paul says these are a shadow of things to come shows that their full potential as laws will be recognized when the Kingdom comes, not that the laws will ever be done away with.

No... I was just quoting scriptures.

It is written we labor to enter into Yahweh's rest. There was no specific day of rest until the Mosaic covenant came into being. Abraham didn't have a Sabbath recorded, did he? Maybe we should review what Yahweh mean we He said "He rested"?

Hi Ken. Good evening. Respectfully, you weren't just quoting scriptures. I was referring to when you said the following: "So... if you want Friday evening to Saturday evening to be your day of worship and you do it as unto God... then God says, "That's great!" If you want Sunday to be that special day, then God says "That's great!". If you are a doctor that worked the weekend shift and you want to make Monday a day for the Lord then "wonderful!" If every day you worship and dedicate it to God, then "amazing!""

I fear Yahweh and as a result I wouldn't say something like that. I don't think it's true either.

Anyway, to answer your question. There was a Sabbath Day long before the Mosaic Law came in to being, and Adam and Eve were taught to keep the Sabbath. Genesis 2:1-3 shows that Yahweh blessed the seventh day and hallowed it. He set it apart as holy. Why would Yahweh set apart a day as holy right from the beginning, but not tell his human creation? Yahweh taught Adam and Eve that He created all this creation in 6 literal days and rested on the 7th and would have taught them to keep the Sabbath Day as a resting day.

The word Sabbath in the Hebrew is Shabbath and the Strong's Concordance lexicon defines it as 'an intermission, specifically the Sabbath'. This word finds its root in the word shavath, which is defined 'to repose, to desist from exertion'. On the Sabbath Day we are to desist from exertion or labor.

I don't have a Bible handy. I believe it’s in Revelation. And it most certainly is in the extra biblical writings of the Church Fathers.
