Remember how starry eyed people used to be about the internet? Its not over, yet. I'm finally starting to see how social networking can be made to work for us instead of against us. All the pieces are now in place which before were not in place when sites like facebook and myspace were founded. We now have what we need to make a truly secure, amicable social network.
Let me share this idea with you, briefly, and outline what will be required to make it happen, all of which now can be done readily with existing software. First of all we (or I or someone) gather together some coders, a lawyer, two designers and an accountant and we put together some software. What can we do? We follow this plan which has three parts:
We take advantage of the new wave of automated hosting to enable individuals to easily share the cost of making individual sites which function together much like a social media site. We use common automated logins (already devised and available) such as the github login which function using a cookie. A user logs in one time, and then they can visit any site that accepts this cookie (their friends). Therefore we use it to make it so that they can visit any friend's site where they are permitted. So, instead of a single large site holding every person's data, we break up social networking into something which looks a bit like myspace or facebook but which is individual. We secure individual data, thereby letting people truly share their information with friends in a secure fashion. Its all built into the software which must be open sourced to keep it honest.
This is my new plan! Its basically just revisiting the initial wish of M. Zuckerberg and others to unite people but taking advantage of technology they didn't have. This plan will be very upsetting to larger social media companies, but honestly they're all failing anyway. They can't last much longer, and they're disappointing everyone.
I have kept this brief and haven't gone into all of the necessary details such as digital signatures etc. Basically the coders, lawyers, designers are necessary to insure its simple, fair, not stuck to a particular hosting service and that people don't have to be experts to make a site.
