What it would be like to have pride in my country?

Twilight Hue

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
I am watching a UFC event tonight and it is common to hear fighters talk about their country and are proud to be where they are from. I like to fantasize about what that would be like because my country (the US) is a real piece of ****. A place where the likes of Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, and Lauren Boebert get elected on purpose.

If I traveled abroad, I would lie about where I came from if asked. I do not see any justifiable reason to be proud of being from here. We have no identity, our politicians pander to the lowest common denominator, we terrorize nations from half a world away via drone strikes, we let legislation be bought by the highest bidder, we allow our school kids to get shot up multiple times a year, we watched as a pandemic ripped our population apart, we let our countrymen go into insurmountable debt for basic medical treatment, etc etc etc.

If I could, I could leave and never come back. This place sucks.
On purpose? So the election is rigged.

Trump was right!

Pride I associate with being a patriot. Not all patriots are racists, but all racists certainly call themselves patriots. So personally I wouldn't touch the last refuge of the scoundrel with a bargepole. But I would say it would be good to feel at ease in the country in which one lives. This is more likely the more unified in outlook its inhabitants are. It seems to me from the outside the US is quite fractured, as if two peoples are living on the same landmass, begrudgingly. I can only empathise, I find myself in a similar scenario - it becomes more likely by the day the UK is going to break up - Scotland (at least) seems to be moving in that direction at pace.

Yes, and I reckon Northern Ireland will go its own way too eventually, reuniting with Eire and rejoining the EU. Not sure about Wales. ;)
Brexit has obviously been very divisive in Britain, though to me the current divisions in the US looks more extreme and fundamental.

You're probably right. Analysis showed Wales' vote in favour of brexit was because of retired English people living in Wales. At least Trump has gone, we're stuck with brexit for the foreseeable. (Yes I have a friend with an Irish passport - recently obtained).

I diagnose a temporary condition, PTSD (Post Trump
Stressenfunkenden Disorder). Really...look it up...it's
in the DSM.
The last 4 years clearly weighed heavily on some, & were
punctuated by the really nasty post-election events. The
media relentlessly fueled hostilities, polarization, & paranoia
on both sides of the aisle. It's a false reality...one to avoid
inhabiting.
I have good news....
It will pass. It will pass on its own. But I recommend
taking an active role in forcing your brain to leave that
reality. Find a better one. I've seen you do it before.

BTW, there are many things I really loathe about
Ameristan. And I dwell upon them. I rage & roar.
But then I set them aside, & return to the ordinary
positive things in life. I don't allow the place to be
the problem, otherwise I would be the problem.

Are there Americans?

If you ask someone in the US what they are, you usually hear about their genetic roots.

The only person I've ever heard say they were American was my ex, and the context of the sentence was "I'm an American; I like donuts."

Is that all there is to this culture? Not that donuts are a bad thing, I suppose...
I'm Ameristanian. And I've never had a problem
identifying as one, even overseas. It only comes
up when conversing with people there. And by
then we're just 2 individuals treating each other
as such.
The trick is to not do things like this....

I wouldn't want to live in America. Too many nutters with guns.

You remind me of a lady here telling
me of her trip to NYC. She said she
later realized she'd seen so many movies
involving street crime...
She was surprised that NYC is just another
city, did not see one mugging!

Now, IF you went to, say, South side
Chicago, you would soon enough
see the wrong end of a glock,
if you lived so long.

Your chance of encourtering a
"nutter with a gun" otherwise is vanishing small.

You may live in a city with better crime
stats than the counterpart city in USA of course.

Japan is very safe if you could stand to live there.

You reminded me of someone I know from Singapore,
the reputed clean, safe, & prosperous utopia. She's
from there....but she moved here. No country is perfect
for everyone.

America is an exceptional place and I take great pride in this country. It is a serene, gratifying feeling... and I need only look back at the places I’ve lived, the people I’ve known, and things I’ve experienced to clearly understand what an amazing place this country is. I am fortunate and grateful to exist now in this place, and in this time.

A dear and most valued friend is from Tokyo.
She came for her masters, but found she
couldn't go back to Japan.

Freedom is such a cliche thing to cite,
but that was it. The constraints of Japanese society v the "i can be somebody here!"

And one can in fact find several Google pages
under her name, she has done very well in
rotten stinky USA.

If I were you, I would be proud of your own country.
There are so many things that I analyze about the US and that European countries should emulate.

I think Americans should be more self-confident. They should be more united as Nation.

We can only put our efforts and concerns in so many places before we are stretched thin. Starving children around the world is, of course, a horrible and terrible thing. But I won't lose any sleep over it because I'm human and I have no direct connection to it and my own problems to worry about. Those kids are real kids, but it wouldn't be healthy or a functional life I thought of those deaths as being like a death in my family.
Kind of like when you work in healthcare. You can't get attached to your clients. You leave them at work. They are people, people you work with, people you even help and offer support and encouragement to, but you will go mad if they are more than work. Care and concern is necessary to be good at it. Just as is being able to leave them at work.

"I love / care about everyone in the world "
sounds good but its impossible.

I can't say I really look at america as one big country more than I see it as many different regions.

I do take pride in the pacific northwest, and even if I were to move to Canada for whatever reason, I'd stick close to the salish sea. I like it here well enough that I'd like to get the cascadian flag incorporated into a tattoo in the future.

That's about where the pride ends, though. Not to say I don't like other places in the states, cause I do! They ain't where I'm from, though. Doesn't make much sense to me to find pride in that.

the problem is not in his nation but in himself from whencewhom one cans't not flee.

How did you choose Californistan?
I was looking at bigger city, and I had visited California before and loved it, amd decided there over Seattle to fully get away from winter.
And the people there are way more laid back, more friendly, and aren't uptight religous ********. It's also rare to see Confederate flags there. They are a common site in Indiana.
Amd more helpful too. I was working on my car once and was under, and some lady walking by at first said a friendly hello, and then "holy ****! That's a girl under there!" And then she ran up to me to make sure I was ok.

You can move to USA and be an American.

You could never ever be Chinese.
This pandemic has revealed that Asains, even those born and raised here, are not viewed as Americans. Basically anyone who isn't white gets that, because it's always their ethnicity/origin amd then American. We have Native Americans amd African Americans and Asian Americans. We don't have German Americans or French Americans or Irish Americans.

I knew long ago that SOME would
never see me as " American".

The p.c. people seem particularly odious
in that regard...possibly because of more
social contact with them than with rednex.

I don't see you as Ameristanian.
It's cuz you don't live here, & don't plan to.

But if that ever changes, I could rent a storage unit
& a U-Haul truck to you. Criminy, I'd even arrange
for free admission to a couple antique engine shows.
