Question for people living in the US

No. The media here makes it's money selling advertising space. So the more people they can scare into looking at or listening to or reading their content, the more money they make from the advertisers; who pay by number of the eyes and ears that the medium delivers. So now, every story is a disaster. Every disagreement is a fight to the death. Every issue is the moral dilemma of the ages. You get the idea. This insane incessant hyperbole keeps people paying attention to their content and that increases what they can charge their advertisers for ad-time.

It's all very damaging to our social psyche, which is why the American people are getting nuttier and nuttier by the year. But this is the land that greed built, and where profits trump all else. So no matter how crazy we're all getting, the money pump will not be denied.

Oh this is an ad mag for "preppers". That's a sort of hobby in the USA, in which people fantasise about the collapse of society and build themselves log cabins in Montana stocked with tinned food, water purifiers and GUNS (naturally).
Canned, not "tinned". This is 'Merica dammit!!

And these are the same folks who've displayed an inability to cope with the pandemic.

That is because the "I've got mine" mindset is part of that group. They don't care about what happens to others. It they are at relatively low risk they "have theirs" and do not mind putting others at risk.

You've nailed it. For them, it's all about ME and to hell with the rest of humanity.
