What I wonder is that do you see a difference between religious and Christian?
Many religions claiming to be Christian. How does one tell the difference if there is any? Who is right? Can the truth be known?
It might surprise some to find out the Lord God is not religion!
He is not Roman, Buddhist, Hindu, Mormon, _______(insert religion here).
Have you ever wondered how God would communicate if God, indeed, communicates with man?
Where is God? Where is the ‘communication’, if communication exists?
I was raised religious. Very, very religious.
My relief was immense to find out that the Lord God Almighty was not religion. Praise Jesus. What a burden lifted!
Here is something for your consideration:

How many ‘religions’ study or look like this?

But it's not philosophically.

Hello Alonzo,
I don't think we have met before. A belated welcome to RF.
One of my lifelong friends, Barry, recently died(aged 73).
He was a lifelong atheist, never changing his mind, much to the chagrin of most of the communities he lived in.
Anyway, in reference to the OP, he used to say that people who get religious towards the end of their lives are just 'cramming for their finals'.
He made me chuckle.
There are many religions, not all christian
There are about 50,000 sects of christianity, each interpretating there favourite of over 200 versions of the bible in their own way. They are all christian

Fixed, through history there has been and still are thousands of gods worshiped.
Internet? Phone? Over 3800 if them all supposed to be omni everything creator gods (how does that work?), if a god or gods existed surely they would know?

I would say all those christian sects that have James 1:27 in their bible at least pay it lip service. But to be honest, it's more a humain trait than a religious one

Do you know ‘why’ there are over 300+ ‘versions’?
Do you believe in [a] God?
If you do, is [your] God perfect?
Your hormones change though. Men tend to get a little bit nicer. I don't know what happens to women.
Why over 200 version's? People keep rewriting it. The one you quoted, the kjv was written in the early 1600s, a composite of 6 different popular bible's of rhe time.

I love the conversation. It seems to be a lost art form.

I have always been fascinated by what people believe and why. How they came to understand that what they believe as ‘truth’ to the exclusion of all other belief systems out there...
(Indeed. I drove my loved ones crazy with my ‘why’ questions!)
The interesting thing about my journey is where it led.
I was not one to believe there was final truth that could be known... ‘The live and let live’ mentality was just fine with me.
But there is something lacking in that way of thinking.
If the whole truth doesn’t exist, how does anyone determine what is truth?
Is truth only determined by what I feel is truth, or what another feels is truth?
I like it, so you cannot judge me?
If I like it, it is good for me!
The use of any scripture would be lost on you.
For the most part, atheists could have videos of God in them and still mock.
If truth is to be known, if it can be known, all minds must be open to the idea, and let it lead to where it leads...
I wonder if you have even read the bible for yourself? Or do you judge God based upon your own feelings?
I would like to add that most atheists just hate [a] God and the very idea of [a] God. Atheists think [a] God is no good and that they could do better than [any] God.
And because atheists feel strongly in their disbelief in [any] God, the ability to reason, because of the (strong!) feelings, is lost.

I have read 3 different versions from start to finish, and several others in bits and peaces
You have strange idea of atheism, judging a god would be like judging harry potter. I did make my decided to leave christianity behind was originally becsuse of christians, followed by reading the bible to see why those christians were so sick. Its all in there, the teaching of hatred to those who dont confirm.
Hating a fiction is futile. And you seem to be making judgments of something you dont understand. But hey, it happens all the time on RF so you will fit right in

IMO:
I think people do not get more religious as they age, they become more religious by having experiences as a result of their practice.
Many people have lots of unresolved suppressed emotions, which need to come out one day or another
IF a person is nearing death, and fear becomes more then he might start believing in God
Also some return to religion when they age, after they left religion due to .....

In Holland, in the past 100 years, ca. 99.9% being religious reduced to ca. 50% religious
So, it seems there are other reasons that have more impact on getting more religious or not
Because the ca. 50% reduction did not increase when getting older
I think a major reason for people leaving religion, is fact checkers; fear of Hell is not taken for granted anymore

I don't think so. People raised in religious homes often leave around puberty or shortly after. It doesn't often go the other way.
What about you? Are you not also mining in your own goldmine? How many mines have you worked in?
When you find a gold mine and it continues to yield the genuine stuff, why would you stop?
If OTOH, you found fool’s gold and you didn’t bother to find out if it was the real deal, would your efforts ever lead to riches or success?
Christ spoke of spiritual riches (he never recommended material riches) and told us to accumulate these riches like a bank account in heaven. If what we are depositing is counterfeit however, then what we imagine to be stored wealth will turn out to be worthless. Though we thought that we were rich, we were really pathetically poor. How would we feel when we discovered the value of our stash?
This is the situation as I see it in the world today. You have to find the real “gold”.

I am a believer but it hasn't always been that way. That said, I think quite a few share your sentiments Mr Tanner. In my opinion things would have been different say a seventy five to a hundred years ago. In this agnostic era it seems advanced age has little to do with encouraging religious belief. I don't know anyone who turned to religion just because were they were becoming more aged. However, while in the army I personally witnessed the fear of imminent, sudden death converting a fellow agnostic soldier to religion, maybe it was one of those 'just in case' there is a god things. (lol, no disrespect meant). So, while both examples are similar, the time of when death might occur are different. Interesting, huh?
So Mr Tanner my guess is you are in a large crowd of like minded people. Judging by trends of wanon apostasy of church goers and an increasing number of people choosing to invent their own religion or no having religion at all etc. your clique of like minded souls...er' people will grow exponentially. *
Hey, revolting... I decided to take my chances when I was younger, sinning ie having fun, hoping I beat the odds of living an extremely high risk (taking) hedonistic lifestyle and not biting the bullet while doing so before I 'got religion' ! But I nearly lost that bet!

Back in the 1960's there as a talk show with host David Susskind ( I think was his name )
One evening he had a doctor on who had research about people at the time of their death bed.
The doctor said he did Not see death-bed changing as they got closer to the end of life.
What he found ( and I've failed at this ) was that people die with -> regrets.
For example: The father who did Not make that dog house for his son.
The father who did Not make the doll house for his daughter, and so forth along that line of thought.
I thought what the doctor said made a lot of sense to me and I thought I would spend my life trying to Not end up with regrets (I've failed )
As a non-believer I wonder if you have read the Bible or studied the Bible by topic or subject arrangement.

No I am hardly a Bible Scholar but I enjoy reading certain things about Biblical Times---Like the Trial of Jesus and the beheading of John the Baptist.
