'The Truth'

In the church that Boss went to the following words were inscribed on the pulpit.:

"The truth shall set you free."

I never went to church so was privy to other versions of freedom. She informed me that she never did figure out what it meant. So ... what does it mean to you? (This is not a debate thread.)

You already know what it means to me. ;)

Strange they would put that in a church though... :p

It is one of my favourite passages from the Gospel of John and can have many meanings. Its always helpful to consider the verse in context of the chapter has a whole.

John 8 KJV - Jesus went unto the mount of Olives. - Bible Gateway

For example Jesus considered Himself the way, the truth and the light. So through His Teachings we could attain freedom from the conditions and bondage of this world.

It means the truth of Christ, salvation, would free you from the bonds of sin. The idea is you dont have THE truth and you need to be free from your ignorance.

I don't hear it anymore since I haven't gone to that type of church in years.

It means we shouldn't believe.

It's the words Jesus said in John 8:32, so I can only say that the truth is what Jesus taught. Thus he was saying that what he taught - the truth, would free persons in several ways - free from false teachings, and free from sin and death.
Those were the two things he said he came to free men from. (Luke 4:16-21 ; Matthew 20:28)

@Vinayaka I should have added, in verse 31, Jesus said. "if you remain in my word, you will know the truth". Another verse says, truth is in him. So that confirms truth is what he taught.

Nothing my eye, Something for sure
I think that statement is not necessarily true from the perspective of being human. Once you have some proven truth in your understanding then you have to submit to it, have faith in it, and then you have to apply its principles and teachings. In short you have to become true to it, and judge by its fruits, or the results it gets you.

If there is a divine perspective, then perhaps truth conquers all and can set us all free.

I believe a person can be set free in a spiritual sense though still being bound by life's circumstances. So then it all depends on the kind of freedom and truth sought. I don't think spiritual truth necessarily equates to economic freedom. Most things cost to attain to.

IMO:

Know the Truth will set you free from worldly attachment. Free as in Self Realized and free from the cycle of Life and Death

So the truth is that Jesus will free you from sin?

But it doesn't say just what that truth is. I can say I taught math. What do you think that truth he taught actually is.
