Imagine that nobody cares...

Imagine for a moment that nobody cares about you. Nobody cares that you exist, that you are happy or that you are sad, whether you are dead or alive. Nobody cares about how what they do might impact you for better or for worse.

It goes without saying this would be a cold, harsh existence.

But imagine you are in that world where nobody cares. Except you. There's one person who cares, and that's you. What do you care about? What inner strength or deep values keep you going in a universe that couldn't care less about the fact that you exist or have thoughts and feelings? What is your proverbial light in the dark?

Let it shine!

I guess faith and creativity could keep me going for quite awhile.

And honestly, the world you're describing is how I saw the world under Trump. And I'm not just going by what the media says. I watched the impeachment trial all the way through. And I also paid attention to Twitter etc.

Creativity is important for sure.

Could you unpack what you mean by faith and creativity here? Do you mean something like hope for all the today's and tomorrow's? Do you mean engaging in the fine arts? Creativity is a good outlet - I should remember that one more myself!

Apathy and lack of empathy transcends the current American presidency. And in fairness, it is hard to care about other people's problems sometimes, like when we are wrapped up in our own. I wager even these people really just want a helping hand. Even if they say they don't want it. It seems fundamental to just want to be loved and understood no matter who you are.

Can one really imagine being the only one who cares for him or herself? Many cultures the individual doesn't exist apart from the whole. So, asking how one sees themselves without recognition of the group is counterproductive than in American culture where the individual is seen in a positive way themselves as individuals. Individuals within a group vs a group of individuals.

I don't know what I'd do if I was the only person who cared for myself. I'm born, raised, and bred in America but I do find human nature for human contact and definition of our identity also based on others is essential for survival. Without that bond, they'll die.

Maybe engaging in the fine arts. As I find having hope to be pretty difficult sometimes. Not impossible, but hard.

As for faith, I think at times when no one else cares, it may be useful to delve into philosophy to find answers, and that philosophical search could even lead to religion.

I wish I could say that my proverbial light in the dark would be God, but that is not what it would be.... wanna know why? Because deep down inside I do not believe that God gives a twit about me or anyone else.... I was just listening to the Christian radio station song "God so loved the world that He gave His only Son to save us...." I do not believe we needed to be saved so big deal. If God wanted to save us from hell, God would not have created a material world that we would have to live in for 80 some years, but mostly, God would not have made humans and animals mortal so we could lose our loved ones over and over again.

Back to your question: My light in the dark would be what it is now, my cats and other creatures big and small, the ones that die because the "loving" God designed it that way. :(

I care about truth and kindness. I care about beauty and honesty. I care about helping, even if there is nothing in return.
If more people were like you the world would be a much better place. :)

Maybe it is not very nice to say this, but in general I have found atheists to be more caring than believers, and obviously they don't do it to get to heaven.

Cool supposition. We could (at the least), look at it from various perspective:

- relativism vs. not-relativism
- evangelism vs. not
- a multi-step "choose your own selection of philosophies" adventure
- what's out short list of top most important values

And so on..

Wow!
