What are your thoughts on Luke 14:33?

The quote from Jesus to forsake all that you own to be his follower (Luke 14:33) seems to be pushed under the rug quite often in the churches. Has anyone else noticed that this teaching is often twisted by prosperity teachers to condone a rich comfortable lifestyle? I found this video that really hammers home on the importance of forsaking all. I would be curious to hear others thoughts on this.

I do not know who I blame more. The megachurch preachers who collect thousands each week or the poor people who are dumb enough to keep sending money to them.

Funny thing is people tend to confuse "forsake" with "give me all your stuff"*.

Practically, its pretty bad advice if you ask me.

*I see a Monty Python skit in all this. "Forsake and give it to me. Now that you have all my stuff, you must now forsake it all back to me"!

I think you have made a very singular and laser beamed statement for certain people and misapplied it for the whole of the church.

If God was against prosperity He would have never prospered Abraham, Isaac or Jacob. He would have never given Deuteronomy 8 or 28. He would have never blessed David or Solomon. Joseph would never have been lord after Pharaoh.

Suggest a better application... speaking to those who would be called to be Apostles. Yet even then the Apostle Paul, though having learned how to be content with lack, also had times of great blessing.
