Jesus was crucified by the Romans because he had caused trouble in the temple and was claiming to be the King of the Jews. Romans had very little patience with this sort of thing, and crucified a lot of people for causing this sort of trouble.

The Sanhedrin had no power to execute. Thus Jesus' execution was solely the responsibility of the Romans, who DID have that authority.

the sanhedrin played a part. simply because there is an executioner doesn't mean there wasn't a prosecutor

Bible tells this:

The chief priests therefore and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, "What are we doing? For this man does many signs. If we leave him alone like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation."...
John 11:47-53

Pilate answered them, saying, "Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?" For he perceived that for envy the chief priests had delivered him up.
Mark 15:9-10

I'm not talking about executioner. I'm talking about authority to convict and execute. The Sanhedrin had no power to issue an execution. Furthermore, if you believe the gospel account, there were numerous problems with the meeting of the Sanhedrin which render it an illegal court.
