Too much depends on the bible?

No*s, since it is impossible to be rational all the time, is that not an argument against the notion that we can have a comprehensive and coherent morality based solely on reason?

That is what I firmly believe. That would be an unlivable system, and I'm not too fond of those. Something extra has to be added. What that is will vary from individual to individual and faith to faith, but it is always suprarational.

Sunstone, we've all been saying what we think, but what do you think?
Thank you for asking, No*s! I think you and Scott have made some very good points in favor of the view that a purely rational morality based on sound reason alone is probably a quixotic dream with no hope of realization. But that rather, it is necessary to have a mix of rationality and something else. For you and Scott, that something else seems to be faith or revelation. For myself, I would tentatively point to intuition or natural conscience.

I sometimes think that our intuition -- our gut instincts -- are more valuable and comprehensive than our reason alone. I think intuition can take into account things that we are barely or scarcely aware of consciously, while our reason merely takes into account what we are consciously focused on.

I hope that helps to clarify my views.

Thanks and welcome.

Yes, it does clarify it quite a bit. I know a lot of people who feel the same way as you, but there are an innumerable number of sources for that little extra element that I figured it'd be interesting to know what the thread-starter felt about it.

Yes it does, thanks.

I would like to point out that your intuition or gut instincts are something that I believe is God inside you.... your conscience is just a bit of God's grace leading your life.... so I would have to agree with you that it's awfully important in our lives!

Peace,
Scott

What are morals if there is nothing certain and constant that they are based on? The bible has stood the test of time therefore God must be on to something :eek:p

I will try to ask something else since my other ideas sucked apparently.

The Bible is worthwhile to BASE the general concept of your beliefs and God's words. Although it may have lost alot in translation over time, the general translation has never lost it's meaning.

"I, Jehovah, am your God, the One teaching you to benefit yourself."—ISAIAH 48:17.

JEHOVAH GOD knows best. Nobody surpasses him in thought, word, or action. As our Creator, he is aware of our needs and supplies them abundantly. He certainly knows how to instruct us. And if we apply divine teaching, we benefit ourselves and enjoy true happiness:)

It pleasantly surprises me that on some fundamental questions there does not seem to be that much of difference between your views and my own, Scott. Were I a believer, I would very much consider my conscience or intuition to be "a bit of God's grace" or presence in my life.

I do think that how we interpret our intuitions needs to be weighted by reason, for it's been my experience that we can become confused about what our intuitions are really telling us. It's a bit of a trick at times to be clear about them.
