Are men scary?

When it comes to rape I perceive multiple strategies people employ to lessen its impact and to decrease it ranging from separation of males and females to normalization of sex and erasure of taboos. Sometimes its ignorance. I read part of a 1910 manual which alleged that sometimes people got married not knowing that sex existed. Sometimes its punishing rapists more harshly or less harshly. Sometimes its punishing rape victims. In almost any society you can see a concern about rape and a strategy to try to prevent it.

And in many societies the rapist thinks, and usually does, get away with it. Say i dress in a short skirt to excite my husband, that does not mean i am inviting rape by anyone who fancies their chances. However if it went to court, the defense would shout loudly that i invited it. And a majority male jury would agree.

Hmm. Not here, but yes in some places. It used to be like that here but no longer. The system here would no longer easily allow an all male jury if in such a case. Its because we had a lot of problems with racial injustice, and juries packed with white people were convicting black people. Eventually the higher courts put a spotlight on that, and since that time jury selection here has to at least statistically appear to be random or the defense has a complaint. You might have a court of half men or 8 to 2 or something like that but all men, no.

My thinking is that as a society we are still behaving like Wile E Coyote about this topic. Its the Road Runner, and we keep making bad decisions in an attempt to catch it, and we have all these ACME contraptions we're trying in all the wrong ways. Some of them are good ideas, too.

Things have improved tremendously in most of europe but it seems still weighted in favour of the rapist.
