Are Catholics Christians?

IF they read the Bible and believe that Jesus was the promised Messiah (Christ) then they should be Christians but instead they invented this whole Catholic thing with Popes and Saints, the virgin Mary being the mother of God and the list goes on. They are just as misled as Jehovah's Witnesses IMHO.

God is going to sort all of this out during the time of the end anyway and the real faith or true religion will be the last one standing. The rest will be residing where Sodom and Gomorrah are, oblivion. And Jesus, God's son will come and teach everyone who remains the real meaning of being a true follower of his father, God.

You have me intrigued by this statement. Now, is this real/true faith/religion the one seen by God? So what happens to all other religi0ons at the time of this end?

And when is this end? Wait do not answer. You have inspired another thread.

They are swallowed in a great chasm that opens beneath their feet.
Seriously...I`m not making this stuff up.

t3gah, have you done any reading at all about the early church? The Bible didn't just drop down from heaven as a unit, and it can't be understood outside of the context in which it was created.

Scripture indeed contains all things necessary to salvation, but that doesn't mean that anything *not* contained in Scripture is detrimental to salvation. It's not necessary to ask saints to intercede for you, but that doesn't mean it's not helpful.

As far as the title "Mother of God" is concerned, do you believe that Jesus was God or not? Most Christians believe that the Son is coeternal with the Father and that there was no time when the Father was and the Son was not; therefore, Jesus was God even in utero. Hence Mary's title of Theotokos.

Yes, Catholics most definitely are Christians. Why wouldn't they be Christians? A Christian is a follower of Jesus and His teachings.

Well, Holly - that is my point, more or less. The sad truth is that there are some people that want to claim the title of "Christian" and deny it to others. That's a tough sell, in my book. Especially when the other faith got to the title before yours did.

If all of the symbols, rituals, dogma, customs and creeds that came from the Catholic Church and are now used and incorporated in the Protestant Church were eliminated, the Protestant Church would have nothing.

The Catholic Church is truly the foundation of the Protestant Church that just so happen to have been established by a Catholic Monk.

Sometimes I wonder whether some of us Christians are Christians, lol.

I'm just amazed this thread reached over 200 posts. More amazing is why people seem to want to patent the word Christian.

To be honest, I would say that it is utter nonsense to even be discussing this. This debate stems from the post of a member that is making the distinction between "Christians" and "Catholics". For my limited knowledge, it would seem that Catholics have more right to make the claim that they are Christian than any of the Protestant faith. As an Agnostic, I don't really care where this goes, but I'd hate to see an entire generation of Protestants grow up thinking that Catholics were something other than Christian.

Catholics are Christians.

Catholics do have some messed up tradition and I think they hinder their relationship with God and blessings in their life by the way they choose to believe. But they do believe in the Bible and Christ.

Would you like to explain their 'messed up traditions'?

Of course Catholics are Christians. For heaven's sake, Christianity would not exist today if it weren't for the Roman Catholic Church.

Some of our Orthodox friends would probably disagree

Hmmm. Maybe I should have just left it at "Catholic" instead of "Roman Catholic." What I was trying to get at was that I believe that Catholic Church (Eastern and Western) can be credited with keeping Christianity alive during a period of time when it might have died out altogether. Obviously, I don't agree with all of their doctrines, but then I'm not one to say that someone has to believe everything I do in order to be a Christian.

Of coarse we are Chirstians. As a matter of fact we were the first Christians. If it wasn't for us, for our councils and for our fathers and Popes you would not have the new testament today that you know it.

I knew that's what you meant - just trying to make sure you say what you mean :)

hahaha, used to be catholic, went to a protestant church a few times... looked the same...

only difference was the singing...

and that there was a whole lot more pressure to... accept JESUS CHRIST AS YOUR SAVIOR!!! WORD OF THE LORD!!! THANKS BE TO GOD!!! etc...

major difference is the energy level...
