The Big Why...

Halcyon

Lord of the Badgers
What i'd really like for this thread is for at least one person from all the religions we have represented here at RF to explain the Big Why answer of their religion (if it has one) and if it doesn't, why it doesn't.

The Big Why is, why does the universe exist?

Oh i forgot to clarify, saying "Because God made it." is a how, not a why.

I want to know the reason for God to make it (if that's the how of your religion), the why he made it at all. :)

Because He wanted to. :)

That's a hard question to answer...as I'm not the Creator of the Universe...I don't really know the WHY.

However, based upon what I've read and have experienced of God...I would say LOVE had quite a bit to do with it. The universe was created by LOVE to LOVE the Creator.

Psalm 19:1 says that "the heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament shows His handiwork."

The universe is our spiritual school. The whole universe is a reflection of God.

God made the universe for our spiritual knowledge and understanding, just as we have made schools and universities for material knowledge and understanding.

I agree; I just accept that I am such a small part of God's whole "creation " that I would never understand the 'Why' - nor can I even begin to imagine what God is (although being an inquisitive human, I do sometimes conjure ideas in my head - until I realize the excercise is pointless.)

mostly harmless

Endlessly amused
in a much shorter version:

Life is for experiencing what we already know. Then we go back home and reflect, if we're not happy with how we did, we come back and try again.

In knowing ourselves better, we become closer to God. We also, as we grow, become more like God. We can either keep coming back to work on our soul's perfection, or decide we are done and stay home.

I believe that the universe (and all the other universes that may exist) exist as expressions if "God's nature". Existence is "God expressing Itself". We are "God expressing Itself".

I also choose to believe that the essential nature of "God" is love, and so existence is God's love expressing itself as energy, matter, space, time, etc. And we are God's love expressing itself as human beings.

I have no proof for this belief. I simply choose to hold to it because I like it, and because doing so has a better effect on my life than not doing so.

That is very near to what I have thought (when I have allowed my mind to ramble on)...

so we could drink and make merry, why else? :D

is this only for creationists?
No Mike, its for anyone.

Do you believe the gods created the universe? If so, why? Unless the drink and make merry is your actual answer. :)

This sums up my belief as well.

The first thing that popped into my mind when I read the OP was an Alan Watts quote that basically says that the universe "peoples" the way an apple tree "apples." We didn't come into this world, we grew out of it.

Why? Because it's part of God's nature to do so. Love means giving, sharing, and creativity.
