I was just scammed today

The Sum of Awe

Brought to you by the moment that spacetime began.
I called a fake Apple Support number that I found online and the guy told me to buy two eBay cards and max them out at 200$ each and had me send him the codes on the back and on the receipt. (Yes, I already know I’m an idiot for falling for such a lazy scam).

I called Capitol One, the credit card company I payed for the eBay cards with, and they said they can Dispute the Charge when the charge is done Trending and has been Posted (3–5 days) but there is no guarantee I can get a refund.

I asked Walgreens (where I bought the cards from) if I can get a refund for my purchase and they declined. So if the credit card company gets ahold of them and gets information from them, wouldn’t they decline them also if they declined me?

Should I just try to use the eBay cards before the other guy does? Should I wait it out and see if I get a refund? Is there anything else I can do?

I tried calling eBay for support but it seems like I need an account to call them and I don’t have one.

That is crappy.

I am guessing those cards were drained instantly. Why were you willing to pay $400 to apple support? What were they selling?

Like I said, I didn't know what I was thinking.

I was told by the guy that he filled up my credit card with 400$ to spend on the cards. I was sent three texts messages from apparently him that seemed legit.

Twilight Hue

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
Probably fell prey to a phishing site

Rule of the thumb is never do any transactions over the internet. If you must, verify before you buy.

Hell if it was me I'd run out the door and spend those cards on myself as fast as I could and give the finger to the guy on the phone.

1) If you gave the scammer your credit card # you’re going to need to cancel the card and have a new one issued.
2) I doubt you will see your money back. Walgreen owes you nothing. They didn’t scam you. You came in, chose what you wanted to buy, then bought it. What you did with the gift cards is not their problem. Assuming the charge is disputed, I strongly suspect that it will be found that while you may have been scammed by a third party, the charge at Walgreen is found to be legit.

I wasn't trying to sound admonishing with a rhetorical question. I am wondering about the specifics.

Why was he putting money on your credit card to buy the ebay cards?

There's people on Youtube that go after the scammers.

Won't help you directly but may make you feel a bit vindicated.

I was told that it would help me get my Apple ID restored when I don't have access to the old number associated with it.

I only gave the last 4 digits of the credit card and told him it was Capitol One MasterCard Other than my name he doesn't have any information about the card.

I tried saying screw it to redeem the codes on a laptop from Ebay and they were both drained (as I expected). You're probably right though, I don't expect Walgreens to refund my purchase. But would it help if I told my Card Company I have evidence it was a scam? (A police officer took pictures of the text messages, the website, and even talked to the guy on the phone)

You may have a solid case that you were scammed. The issue, however, is not whether you were scammed. An accommodation, if any, made on your behalf by Capitol One or Walgreen or eBay would be outside of any legal obligation. Again, we’re not talking about someone stealing your credit card and using it. We’re not talking about Walgreen overcharging you for an item, giving you the wrong item, or engaging in any kind of action that would render the charge disputable. The same holds true vis-a-vis e-Bay.

Your real claim is against the scammer. Good luck.
