James Mattis on Trump

We are witnessing the consequences of three years of this deliberate effort. We are witnessing the consequences of three years without mature leadership. We can unite without him, drawing on the strengths inherent in our civil society. This will not be easy, as the past few days have shown, but we owe it to our fellow citizens; to past generations that bled to defend our promise; and to our children.

A remarkable statement from the 26th U. S. Secretary of Defense from January 2017 through January 2019.

Easy to say when you walk off the job and knowingly leaving the nation to the hands of that immature leadership. If he really thought was a threat he would have stayed and worked to thwart and balk Trump whenever and wherever need be. The people doing that are the ones doing what they can to save the nation. He gave up on us.

Is this a good time for bitter in-fighting?

Those who criticize or appear disloyal are soon looking for new jobs either way.

Is there ever a good time for bitter infighting?
Or a better time than Now?

However infighting is probably the only way to change the direction of travel, in politics.
If you do not stand up and be counted inertia is the winner.
When in a downward spiral, as now, inertia takes you ever deeper.

A very large number of people need to stand up,
And very soon.

It's also noteworthy and valuable.

If he really thought was a threat he would have stayed and worked to thwart and balk Trump whenever and wherever need be. The people doing that are the ones doing what they can to save the nation.
Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good.

He gave up on us.
Every principled, public act by the previously complicit is a victory and, perhaps, an omen.

(Those who respond to Javert's suicide with no more than a peevish "good riddance" have missed much.)

He still gave up and stepped asode instead of fighting as long as he could. You don't give up whem things are hard, especially when the stakes are so high and directly a lot of people.

Im skeptical as it seems like he's trying to jump on the bandwagon. It seems questionable on how much of a threat he really considers Trump given the circumstances behind his resignation. That wasn't a point he was making when Trump damned America's Kurdish allies. He didn't stay around to do what he can to thwart such a disaster happening again. Instead he stepped asode and gave Trump another opportunity to fill the spot with a yes-man.

They pretty much had to drag it out of him as he refused to bad-mouth Trump and the administration up until now.

Mullins opened the door on this, and especially what happened at the church a few days ago really must have gotten under Mattis' skin, along with Trump's statements of sending in federal troops even if the governors didn't want them.

It's the Constitution and the "rule of law" that is at stake here, neither of which does Trump give a diddly-damn about. Our democracy is on the line, and I'm not using hyperbole by saying this.

What I'm seeing is the perfect becoming the enemy of the good.

Career military man Mattis didn't wait around for Trump to fire him. He left with his head held high. He left on his own terms, keeping his respect and authority.

Now he can rightfully criticize the government, calling them out when, where, and how he thinks appropriate and positive.

Would you rather he didn't?
What?
