Brazil has the second-highest number of coronavirus cases in the world after US - CNN

Brazil has become the country with the second most coronavirus cases worldwide after the United States.

The country's health ministry reported 20,803 new cases on Friday, bringing the total to 330,890 confirmed cases.

Brazil hits record high for new coronavirus cases

Brazil's cases have surpassed the number in Russia, where health officials more recently reported 326,448 cases.
More than 1.5 million cases have been reported in the US, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University.
Last week, Sao Paulo's mayor warned that its health system could be overwhelmed very soon if residents don't follow social distancing guidelines. Officials in the city of 12 million have declared a five-day holiday in a bid to get residents to stay home.
But President Jair Bolsonaro continues to dismiss the threat of the virus, saying quarantines and lockdowns could have a worse impact on Brazil's economy.

In rural California community, officials slow reopening

Soon, though, county officials saw a worrisome trend: nearly 30 new cases in a two-week period and the first two deaths.

That has prompted Humboldt County officials to take a more cautious approach to reopening, in what may be a harbinger of the “toggle switch” local officials are likely to negotiate as they emerge from the lockdown.

“We have to recognize that due to some pretty serious increases that we’ve seen in cases and recently, two deaths, that it’s prudent to take a really careful approach and open up things a little more slowly than we’d really like to,”

Meanwhile their president manages the almost impossible - outdoing Trump in uncaring callousness and lying.

Apparently we really want to win a competition on who has the worst president.

Just so you guys understand the mess we are in, this is my very own report:

Bolsonaro (Brazil's president) prioritizes our economy over our health (but he is stupid and doesn't understand the economical implications of the disease in itself). For him, people dying is what happens every single day, and so what if thousands more get to die because of Covid? So he is completely opposed to social distancing and quarantine in general.

A few pointers:

1) His first Health Minister got fired for not agreeing with him and the second one has recently quit because he couldn't act as the puppet that Bolsonaro wanted. Both of them were doctors by the way. Now we have got an interim health minister who is not a doctor and that is likely to do what Bolsonaro wants.

2) The situation just isn't worse because our governors are doing the best they can to prevent a complete disaster.

3) Bolsonaro gave himself the power to claim what counts as an essential service, a category of activities that can't be stopped during this crisis. You might be thinking on something related to supply chains, right? Great but he also included gyms and beauty salons on his list. By doing this he wanted to strip the power from governors and effectively put an end to the quarantine, our supreme court acted quickly and declared he can only have this power when it comes down to matters of national impact and not merely local impact.

'Silent' COVID-19 More Widespread Than Thought

A new cruise ship study suggests that the number of people who are infected with the new coronavirus but have no symptoms may be much higher than believed.

More than 80% of those who tested positive for the infection had no symptoms, according to the study...

The findings suggest that coronavirus infection rates on cruise ships are likely to be "significantly underestimated," and that passengers should be monitored after leaving the ships to reduce the risk of community spread of the virus, according to the researchers.

The study authors also said that the potentially high rate of false negative results obtained with current swab tests suggests the need for secondary testing.

We start on a one-month Unlock-1. 9 pm to 5 am, curfew, distancing regulations. Hot-spots, Containment areas, no relaxation.States can modify the regulations to their particular needs. But situation not good. 90,000 active cases, 5,164 deaths. We were lenient in the beginning.
