Mr. Spock Lied to You

In the TV and Movie series, Star Trek, the character "Mr. Spock" most often uses the term "logic" in an ignorant and potentially misleading way. Especially in the earlier shows and movies. It makes for good drama, though.

Spock might not have been lying. He might just be an ignorant, pointy-eared twerp responsible for writing several parenting books of dubious quality.

Yeah, Spock liked to think that to be logical is the same as being emotionless.

I think that it’s more likely that being emotionless, or rather controlling the emotions allows one to think more logically. The thought process isn’t clouded by emotion.

For example in the episode Amok Time, when Spock confronts T’Pring at the end of the Kal-if-fee:

SPOCK: T'Pring. Explain.

T'PRING: Specify.

SPOCK: Why the challenge, and why you chose my captain as your champion.

T'PRING: Stonn wanted me, I wanted him [to want is admittedly an emotion].

SPOCK: I see no logic in preferring Stonn over me.

T'PRING: You have become much known among our people, Spock. Almost a legend. And as the years went by, I came to know that I did not want to be the consort of a legend. But by the laws of our people, I could only divorce you by the kal-if-fee. There was also Stonn, who wanted very much to be my consort, and I wanted him.

If your Captain were victor, he would not want me, and so I would have Stonn. If you were victor you would free me because I had dared to challenge, and again I would have Stonn. But if you did not free me, it would be the same. For you would be gone, and I would have your name and your property, and Stonn would still be there.

SPOCK: Logical. Flawlessly logical.

T'PRING: I am honoured.

SPOCK: Stonn. She is yours. After a time, you may find that having is not so pleasing a thing after all as wanting. It is not logical, but it is often true.

This exchange reminds me of a geometry proof. I had a love-hate relationship with them. And I love that last parting jab. Logical or not. :D

Vulcans cannot lie.
Spock was a Vulcan.
Therefore he did not.

Case closed....unless one argues that his human half did it.
Damn humans.

Racist!
You used the "P" word.

Yeah, Spock liked to think that to be logical is the same as being emotionless. I think he was dealing with being bispecial,
His occasional inconsistent statements notwithstanding, I grokked
that he aspired to not letting emotion over-rule objectivity, knowledge,
reason, & taking the best (logical) course of action.
This was an extraordinary thing in mid-60s TV

A character can only be as logical as the writer who envisions her/him/it.
That's why Spock (*) acts like like someone with an average IQ who pretends to be much smarter.

(*) Vulcans don't have Surnames. It is therefore wrong to call him "Mister" Spock.

Tuvok admitted that Vulcans can lie so your post is fake news.
Damn humans and their fake news.

Starting a debate with Revoltingest about the art of deception, is like starting a debate with Bill Gates about Windows 95.
Btw, I never used Win95. I only ported my op sys (MBOS V6)
to Windows when Win98 Rel 2 became available.

No, that is impossible; because Vulkan's don't lie. It must therefore be your concept of logic which is incorrect, Sunstone.

Sure they lie. I recall an episode where he distracted a guard by casually walking up, pointing and saying something like: "Sir, there is a multi legged creature crawling on your shoulder."
That was untrue, and when the guard looked down Spock did that knockout pinch thing.

Some people only have one name (it's common in Indonesia for example), it is correct to refer to them as Mr/Ms 'first name' in a formal English speaking context.

You need a better joke writer. And a different format.
