Flat earthers religiously motivated or just dumb.

Twilight Hue

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
Flat earthers, never heard of this before, well I knew people in the middle ages thought the earth was flat but not today, maybe they're like the people who say the Earth is only 6000 years old.

Anyway I saw this on the BBC,kind of sad but flat earthers,I'm going with dumb.

Daredevil dies after crash-landing rocket
Well at least Mad Mike was true to his word.

It was his decision anyways to launch himself in a steam powered rocket in the age of GoPro and wireless technology.

While I do feel bad for his family and friends, I also have to say he has unequivocally earned the top Darwin award of which I would even say that he has taken first first-tier for the all-time Darwin award for the year 2020. Well I'm sure many recipients will occur as the year progresses, he'll be always number one in my book.

One could say in a strange twist of irony, it's not the world that was flat. He was.

I think you only get the Darwin Award if you didn’t already have kids. I can’t find any info on whether he did or not.

To me the story is about a Daredevil who dared a little to hard. The Flat earth theory is not really a major thread and him being dumb isn't either. He has the record for longest jump with a limousine and already was successful with a rocket launch to 1870 ft. Even if this guy believe the world was round he'd probably still want to see it for himself, just because its a challenge.

I can't believe I have to say this but if somebody wants to take off in a home-made rocket, you stop them. You don't film it.
Why? He's a big boy. Err. Was.

Plus I think he was dutifully warned anyways. Plenty of times.

Let the cameras roll...

Because I hadn't heard of "flat earthers" before I looked it up and although some don't take it seriously the ones that do are religiously motivated.

Fortunately it's not a significant number of people.

But what's astounding is that there's still people who even think that in this day & age. I don't think it would be all that hard to see for yourself by launching a balloon into the stratosphere equipped with cameras to see the curvature of the Earth for themselves. That will be about 70,000 feet if I remember correctly for people to see the distinct curvature.

There'll probably be required permits and such, red tape, but even so I'm sure there's places where a person can go where they can do that as a group.

A lot of these people are just as lost and vulnerable as the rest of us and are trying to make sense of everything. They are human and looking for meaning in a steadily crazier and more confusing world. It's actually deeply sad. :(

(Edit: the video below may be useful as it shows how people "debate" the subject).

That's what I can't get, there are people who believe in a flat Earth.

I agree it's pretty sad and although it's a crazy world with fake news and misinformation sometimes you have to use your brain for something as basic as this.

A sad way to go, it shows the problems associated with ignoring education in favour of faith.

On a lighter note...

Flat earthers are proud to say they have membership all over the globe.

And it's obvious the earth us not flat, if it were the cats would have knocked everything of the edge by now.

Yes, it's the same with conspiracy thinking in general. It's the product of a confused, scared mind with a hint of paranoia trying to make sense of things. They're not "bad" people. Blame it on a failure of human cognition.
