Passing Gas? No Problem

I find this thread kinda gross, so I'm not doing any research.
I'll just ask.
How can some thin fabric "filter" methane gas? What happens to the fart? It's got to go somewhere.

It doesn't seem plausible to me. This makes even less sense than jeans thongs.

It doesn't. You cannot smell methane gas (though whenever a Brit says the word my brain always asks "You thane?") Methane is a colorless odorless gas. Natural gas is mostly methane, except for one very important added "unnatural" ingredient. An odorant is added to natural gas so that we can smell it if there is a leak. I am not a chemist so I do not know how reactive activated charcoal is, but I think that you might have a valid claim. How quickly can that material absorb the odorant?

OK. So I don't understand farts very well.
I thought methane was the smell producer. Color me corrected.

What does this miracle fabric filter?

Never mind. I'm not sure I want to know that much about farts.
Tom

I will answer anyway. Number one hydrogen sulfide, the odorant they put in natural gas. I heard tales of chemistry rooms being emptied by someone breaking a vial of this stuff. Second ammonia. Third other more complex molecules based upon your diet.

many years ago, the 911 center, and all other lines to the emergency departments were jammed when an idiot with a fork truck punctured an empty cannister of the stuff they put in 'natural gas' so it's detectable. It was a warm and breezy day, and essentially half the city of Springfield was concerned about the gas leak...the amount released was only fumes from the container, yet it was enough to blanket half the city and be detectable 30 miles downwind...a little definitely goes a long, long way...

None of that was an answer to my question.
What do these thin sheets of fabric filter? How do they filter a gas?

Isn't this so much b.s., designed to sell stupid stuff to stupid people?

It sounds like BS to me. I am not buying a pair. I think that one would have to be rather paranoid to consider buying such a product in the first place.

Farts contain a large amount of hydrogen sulfide... the rotten egg smell.
