can a person's political and spiritual views really be separated one from another like vinegar and oil?

Yes.. I would say a bulk of the people following my religion and other pagan-type paths are leftists. I am neither left nor right. I'd be closest to a libertarian, but there is some stuff in that ideology I don't completely agree with so.. I'll just say I'm an individualist and vote for whoever seems the most sensible to me. :D

I don't believe they can. My spiritual views affect my political views to a very large degree so they're not separate for me.

I value honorable people and look at politicians through that lens. Of course they are all too human, but some are better than others when it comes to honor, honesty, integrity and so forth.

And my view that we are all one in essence determines how I view people and by extension government impacting people. So if there's politicians or parties that try to elevate one group over another, they automatically lose my support.

Depends on the religion.

Consider one with where the teacher tells his followers:

"...you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world..."

And

"My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest..."

See that -- his followers are not merely removed from the worldly political struggle. Not only that. They won't even fight, or rather, they are not to fight, in the world political struggle.

Though they would be tempted to do so!
(and would sometimes fall to that temptation)

Because His entire Kingdom is not of this worldly political world at all.

So, you see, it depends on what religion a person is following. One like the above, or instead another that really isn't this way.

There are many religions that do seek political power, and at least one, as you see, that does not.

"But our citizenship is in heaven...."

No, they can't. The problem is the secualr/atheist will claim there is no spiritual. So what is there to 'separate'?
