I Was Forced To Install Windows 10

The shared clipboard requires the "Guest Additions" to be installed on the virtual machine. Then the shared clipboard needs to be enabled under "settings" in the VirtualBox Manager before the virtual machine is started.

I do have VirtualBox install on Windows 10, but the only Virtual Machine I have on it is Windows98se. And there isn't a Guest Additions for Windows98, so , unfortunately I can't test that for you. But, I'm guessing it works if the guest additions are installed.
This I know, and I did it. It was a problem in VBox under Windows. I hoped it was solved now. I did test VB under Linux, and there it worked flawlessly. I was running Linux Mint with VBox running windows XP without a problem (and even quite high speed, and all windows software worked perfectly). But the other way around did not work 3 years ago.

It's a good question. :)

I don't know the answer.

Which Guest OS? Windows XP?

( I've got an iso for that, I'll try it.. )

Yes, I got it to work. Windows 10Pro Host ( Virtualbox 6.0.14 with ext pack ) & WindowsXP Guest ( with Guest Additions ).

Oh, thanks for trying. Wonderful that the copy/paste is working in Windows 10. And thanks for giving the version numbers.

I tried it 3 years ago on Vista. If it works on Windows10, then W10 is better than I thought. I always loved previous windows (exc. Vista) versions, so steady and never problems.

What is your experience. Is W10 as good as W07?

I just thought about reinstalling W07, maybe I better install W10 to give it a try. Hmmm, I just said in this thread that I won't use/need W10 for the coming 10 years..."I love it when my plan falls apart:D."

Question: I always used portable Virtual Box. Did you use installed version VBox?

(VBox is great. Once I tried windows Vista host + Guest XP (in portable VB), and then in Guest XP start another portable VBox with Guest Linux Kiosk; except copy/paste all worked great).

The earlier builds of windows 10 seemed to be error prone and would crash often. The current builds seem to be better.
Thank you. I did try out W10 a few years ago, and it was really bad compared to the great XP I was used to.

Windows 10 was even destroying system files on the Windows 7 partition I had; that's why I was totally done with it. I hope they fixed that problem now.

It's good to hear W10 improved. I will give it another try one day.

Hmmmm....

I've seen something like that; but it wasn't Windows. It was anti-virus software misidentifying system and application files as a threat.

Thanks for the idea, I will keep it in mind when I reinstall and I will check Windows10 (anti-virus software) if troubles are still there. Or it was Microsoft's trick to make me stop using windows 7 by bugging the W7 install (they really wanted all to start using windows 10).

But that would be strange though, because they were both official windows installations, freshly installed. Just messing with files it should not touch. I had no anti-virus installed. But maybe W10 has internal some software who did this. Still strange it did not recognize it's own W7 files. So I guess it was one of the bugs still to be solved (was already a few years ago).

I will put on the newest W10 this time. I have good hopes that problem will be solved now:).

I hear that a lot; but, I have yet to see solid evidence to support it.

Most of the time, it seems like the workstation works a lot better after a fresh clean install of Windows every 2 years or so. It doesn't matter which version it is. It just so happens that this matches the release cycle/road-map.

The problem will be viruses and malware that will collect on the workstation without regular security updates.

I did not hear that before, but coincidentally I experienced it with previous Windows versions when new versions came.
But probably that was just all coincidentally, and this time it was just a bug; which I will find out if I reinstall W10.

If something weird happens, feel free to message me or something...

Maybe I can help you isolate the root cause? Open ended offer, stvdv... totally open :)

Thanks a lot for the offer. So you expect the problem might still be there? I won't do it this month, so I'm glad it's "open ended offer".

You helped already a lot, showing VBox is working good now. I might even switch to W10 and put W7 in VBox if W10 works well on my laptop.

Now I remember the other major reason, why I was not so happy with W10. I hate being forced to accept their security updates/patches (microsoft means well of course, but once a year has been plenty for me always; I'm not that paranoid with hackers and viruses). Do they still force us, or is there a toggle that I can decide myself?

I missed that part the first time I read it.

Very important.

I always make an image of the whole partition after fresh install, and restore it every 6 month or so. Just to be sure and to have it working smooth always.

I doubt it... I really do.

Tangentially:

I have used the Windows 7 backup and restore tools successfully a few times (I usually use linux to backup everything...) , but I haven't tested the new Windows 10 "File History Backups". Maybe that will be my next little side-project.

drivesnapshot.de is my favorite image program since 2003 or so. Never failed me once. And very easy from windows. You can even continue your work while image of the same partition is made.

I tested maybe 10 imaging programs, but this works by far the easiest for me.

And then there's this... I was researching the backup and restore options in Win10... and I'm reminded why I avoid Microsoft whenever possible...

Microsoft Admits Windows 10 Registry Backups Don't Work

"
Picked up by the ever-excellent Ghacks, Microsoft has issued a warning to all its 800M Windows 10 users that a serious and long-running bug in the platform is not actually a bug at all. Instead, the problem was introduced “by design”. And it’s worrying on multiple levels.

What Microsoft confirms it did was quietly switch off Registry backups in Windows 10 eight months ago, despite giving users the impression this crucial safeguarding system was still working. As Ghacks spotted at the time, Registry backups would show “The operation completed successfully", despite no backup file being created. "

Microsoft has now spelt out what was actually happening:

Starting in Windows 10, version 1803, Windows no longer automatically backs up the system registry to the RegBack folder. If you browse to the WindowsSystem32configRegBack folder in Windows Explorer, you will still see each registry hive, but each file is 0kb in size.

{ Big Sigh } It's a feature... not a flaw... It's Microsoft.

Under the same logic, weren't you forced to install all the past operating systems you used?
Windows 7 came with my current computer, which replaced my previous computer that had XP, which replaced the computer previous to that, which had Windows 95.

I can understand why they did it. W10 is too complex to keep it smooth with use of restore points.

I always like to have a "virgin" boot. I never used their option to go back in time. If I mess things up I reinstall image.

Thanks for the article. This was what I wanted to know. This was exactly why I still avoided W10. Microsoft took our freedom with W10.
Ironically, this disclosure comes just two months after Microsoft pledged to give Windows 10 users more "control, quality and transparency".
