It can be beneficial depending on the group. Like anything a strong foundation is important. just my perception.

1Jn 4:1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

1Ti 3:7 Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

If someone wishes to learn the true meaning behind the scripture, it would be beneficial to practice the teaching, because there might be energies within the teaching that heightens once understanding (insight)

But of course, you can study Scripture as an academic study too, just to learn the words

No, but it can help for proper interpretation, imo of course. After all, some religions claim to have similar beliefs, but differ vastly in their interpretation and direction. If the interpretation of a group is satisfying to the individual, it can be recognized by that person the need to adhere to that group.

Why would he need to if they are his thoughts? Unless he's not sure what he was thinking?
God wants people to trust in Him. If the scriptures aren't drawing people to Him; then what good are they doing?

Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. (John 5:39)

I have lost count how many times I have heard a follower of a religious group flat out say that if you are not a fellow follower, you cannot understand their holy writings.

makes it interesting. like saying you can speak said language but you can't understand it.

No but it sure helps. I've found that other religions bring an ax to grind when reading Jewish texts like the Torah (including Christians). Secular scholars seem to do okay -- even add their own knowledge which makes us think. But the real meat comes from us passing along the ancient understandings that have stood the test of time, and are within the context of the community which wrote the texts.
