No, but it can help for proper interpretation, imo of course. After all, some religions claim to have similar beliefs, but differ vastly in their interpretation and direction. I have lost count how many times I have heard a follower of a religious group flat out say that if you are not a fellow follower, you cannot understand their holy writings.Is this a foolish question or what?

No but it sure helps. I've found that other religions bring an ax to grind when reading Jewish texts like the Torah (including Christians). Secular scholars seem to do okay -- even add their own knowledge which makes us think. But the real meat comes from us passing along the ancient understandings that have stood the test of time, and are within the context of the community which wrote the texts.Do you have to be a member of a religious group, in order to interpret scripture?
