Can You Locate Iran on a Map?

A recent Morning Consult/Politico poll of American registered voters found that only 23% of respondents could locate Iran on a map.

Can You Locate Iran? Few Voters Can.

If the map was zoomed in to the Middle East region, scores improved...to 28%.

It's a little amazing to me that people can have such strong opinions of what our military strategy should be in regard to a country when they don't even know where it is. (Notably, political ideology was not a decisive factor in who got the question right; we all did about as terribly).

How about you? Could you locate Iran on a map?

Easily. I'd have a bit more of a problem identifying all the countries on its boundary without looking at a map.

For example, I know there is a boundary with Turkey, but what other countries there? And just north, in what used to be the Soviet Union, but what is it now? The easy boundary countries: Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkey.

But Armenia? Turmenistan, maybe?

/E: Looked it up. I missed Azerbaijan. But I got Turkmenistan right on a fluke.

Yes, I can locate Iran on a map.

This reminds me of a funny story. A woman I worked with was telling me about a new employee, who had just immigrated from Ukraine. She not only didn't know where it was, she had never even heard of Ukraine. She said she called ten of her friends to ask if they knew, and none of them knew what it was. I just shook my head in disbelief.

I took to maps very early in life. I love maps and atlases. I think it was because my dad discovered it was a way to keep me quiet on long trips. I would always say "When are we going to be there?" so he gave me a map and told me to figure it out on my own.

I can. It's a tad bit hard to miss, and for the countries around that area, it's fairly large. Don't ask me to draw the boundaries though.

Of course, I have problems labeling all the US states accurately, and my teachers made me memorize all the states, all the capitols, and draw maps.

I'm old. AND I have chemo-brain. It's not my fault.

Actually, you are probably more correct than you know. ;) I mean, we all know where Alabama SORTA is, but if we were all made to put it unerringly in a 'map of America' puzzle, most of us would try to plunk it on top of either Georgia or Mississippi. On the other hand, I know where Brisbane is.

It's okay, I don't have chemo-brain and I still can't accurately ID all the state capitols! My partners makes fun of me all the time for it. :p I somehow never had to learn it in school. I took several years of Spanish, though, so I do remember various Latin American capitol cities that most Americans probably don't, haha.
