From what I've gathered, people refusing to grow up and take on things more suitable for their age. Some comics like X Men can be wonderful tools to help children learn about social issues, minority issues, fitting in amd being different. But adults saying its how they learn about those things, from the "great writing" in comics? Indulgence and simple things are fine, but adults shouod be learning about the real Dr. King and Malcolm X by reading about them and what they wrote, not the simplified versions found in Charles Xavier and Magneto. Material and literature about AIDs amd the gay community, not picture books.
Picture books can be powerful tools too. Pictures and media representations have been used to promote propaganda in the past due to their more universal appeal. Reading is a niche hobby and always will be. But even people who don’t like to read can absorb messages through pictures very easily. Humans are visual creatures, right?

As a nerd who absolutely has way too much geek merch for a healthy adult, I can sympathise with the people who hold a high regard for their childhood likes.
I’m probably not very grown up. But I’m also an oddity in that I will read about the real Martin Luther King and deep dive into the canon for old philosophy understandings.

That is far more than those who imply, suggest, or upfront state comics are about all they read.

Well reading is like a diet, really. It’s fine if you only want some “junk food” if that is your main aim for reading. Reading nothing but comics is not bad in and of itself. As long as your main aim is entertainment and a little bit of commentary as a bonus. But if one wants to claim that reading should elicit some sort of academic pleasure, then yeah, more “robust” reading should also be a large part of that. I mean at the very least a modern classic or two.
