UK general election 2019: exit poll predicts 86-seat Conservative majority – live news

Well, the guy on the right says "LAB," so I figure that must be a Labrador Retriever. But what breed is the guy on the left?

Not while he can con money out of the system he wont.

No he hasn't, he has damaged the uk while lining his pockets with your backing

I could not give him my backing because there was no Brexit Party candidate in my constituency.

Nigel sacrificed his party for the benefit of the country.

Andrew Neil has just interviewed him and he did not look too despondent.

If the Tories get the majority that is being forecast they will have no excuse if they balls up Brexit.

If they do, Nigel will be back.

I am relieved that it looks like the country could not stomach the prospect of a racist Labour Party occupying Number Ten.

He gave up because he had no chance. Why can't people see what he is?

Two questions:
1. Could someone explain to me how these constituencies work? That only some parties qualify for certain constituencies? And standing/not standing representatives?
2. What's the point of not having all parties available in every constituency?

They got a racist, Tory, self-serving, serial liar instead...

If you're in the UK, for the next five years: don't be ill, don't be poor, don't be old.

It looks like the country has drained the swamp. Many Remoaners have been taught a very good lesson. That is to listen to the people. They failed to do so and paid the price for that failure.

Off hand, I'm not sure. But each party has to submit a deposit for each candidate as a measure of your "seriousness". You have to get above a certain percent of votes to get your deposit back. So if you are a small party and you don't gent enough votes, you won't get your deposit back. Big Parties have more money and get more votes, so they get their deposit back.

2. What's the point of not having all parties available in every constituency?

The supposed advantage is that first past the post gives governments with bigger majorities which makes the country more stable. So screwing all the little parties by preventing them from standing in every constituency keeps the big parties happy. And guess who is the only ones who could reform the system by introducing Proportional representation? Yep- the big parties who are represented in parliament don't have an interest in doing so. The Greens and Liberal Democrats and (I think) the Brexit Party all support proportional representation because they have little representation in parliament, which is precisely why they won't be able to do it. So we never get electoral reform to make it fairer for all the little parties to compete nationally. Hurrah! :D

A "general election" in the UK is actually 650 simultaneous elections for local Members of Parliament. In principle, each constituency votes for a person, not for a party. With a few exceptions, any adult can stand for election, they don't have to belong to a party at all. It's up to the parties themselves whether they put forward candidates in every constituency. There is a £500 deposit required, that is returned if the candidate gets more than 5% of the vote.

Since most people actually vote for a party or PM, the whole thing is terribly undemocratic and disadvantages parties with board appeal and rewards those with localised appeal. That's why Tories like it because they can screw the poor all they want, so long as they look after the rich.

We are going to have to listen to each other more so we don't live in parallel worlds. It won't be easy, but we don't have an alternative at this point if we are to live with each other.

I can only speak for myself but ok, because of an unelectable opposition, the Tories won and won big.
Now let's get Brexit out of the way and I look forward to all the promised benefits....?
Remind me, what are they?
