Just wanted to post that I'm listening to it now, and loving it.
There were 63 Tamil Saiva saints, and 4 in particular who composed songs called thevarams, in praise of Siva, and this is one of them. We have a person at our temple, who can sing like this. It's especially wonderful live. But hey that's just me. I don't understand Tamil, but I'm always moved on the spiritual/emotional level.

I've been to this temple, and Tamil lore considers it the center of the universe, an honorific.

Of the two i would chose Hindu music.

The verbal content of most christian music annoys the hell out of me. I may be being cynical but it seems to me it should be a devotional thing but the impression i get is the music is churned out for the royalties.

I don't get the same impression from Hindu music?

I don't know, I find this comparison somewhat odd. There is a niche for Western singers and musicians making Western-style music with Hindu lyrics. The musicians either sample traditional Hindu chants or sing the mantras themselves. The thing is that very often many people are not aware that they are listening to religious music because it is classified either as electronic dance music or "relaxation music".

Making any kind of art for the sake of a 'cause' almost always results in bad art that causes mostly nothing. If you want to make paintings, make paintings. If you want to save the whales, save whales. But making paintings about saving whales only makes for boring paintings that save no whales. And this is how I feel about most 'religious' music.

There are exceptions, of course. One can genuinely express their 'religious' spirit through a work of art.

I don't pick one over the other. What I'm interested in are songs from the heart, whether they be Western or Eastern, Christian, Jewish, Persian ghazals or Hindu.

I'm Jewish, not a polytheist. Therefore I don't listen to either the Christian music that worships a man, or Hindu praise of many gods. Sorry, but I won't even listen to your examples.
