Purpose?

I'm kind of curious about this asking the universe thing, is the number 42 significant in some way and how do you get your answer from the universe?

42 is an answer from a fictional book, HitchHiker's Guide to the Galaxy, I believe. People often use it on the internet to say that the universe doesn't have an answer or they don't know, so the logical conclusion is what this novel provided - the number 42.

Though, I'm sure there's more depth I can find in this meme, if I had read that book.

Hello everyone and thanks to all those who have commented on my previous three posts I have just barely been here two days and it appears that I am searching for "purpose"
When I initially signed up for this website I did not realize this was where it was going to go so,.....
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF LIFE? This ought to be interesting LOL
The purpose of life is life itself. God created mankind because he was lonely and it is his desire that all of us enter Heaven when we die and live forever with God. Ecclesiastes 12:13-14. The righteous will enter Heaven when they die and they will participate in the resurrection with God and live forever on earth. Zechariah 14:5.

I don't know that there actually is a purpose to life. That would imply that some kind of entity of some sort did all of this on purpose. But how can anyone know? Our existence could have been just an accident. Maybe we're some kind of celestial "waste product" of some sort. We don't have any real purpose.

Maybe "God" is some kind of extra-dimensional being, yet still a kid in school, and our universe is his science project.

I don't know I've wondered about that 2 and maybe there is no purpose, however for me having no purpose kind of means, well what's the point in living if there's no purpose? I mean I know there are a lot of people that get satisfaction out of getting up eating breakfast go to work come home go to sleep and do it all over again or whatever they do might not be work might be drugs or war or burglary or whatever but it's still just the same old same old everyday routine after routine then if you get tired of that routine you just pick another routine and do that one, kind of monotonous and quite frankly seems very pointless, I just really feel like there has to be something more than that? If not nothing I can do to change it but still.....

Well, when you really come down to it, does anything even have a purpose? Nothing we do or accomplish can be expected to last permanently. Even those who might end up on a list of the 100 most influential people who ever lived, even that will go away eventually. Because eventually humans will go away.

Once humans go extinct, the records of our existence will go, too - and it's unlikely that any alien race will ever come around here to "discover" that we ever existed, nor would they likely care even if they did.

In other words, our "purpose" only has value in human society, at least in terms of fulfilling some sort of accomplishment or objective in our existence. But whether humanity itself has any real "purpose" in existing - that's unknowable.

Some people wish they could find their purpose in life, but here's one who actually did:

Right, so this brings me to the question of whether or not the purpose lies beyond this life here, and if so what does that look like or rather can we even know what that is, I guess I wouldn't really care about this if I already had something else that was interestingly enough for me to get satisfaction from. In a nutshell I guess it appears as though I'm bored with my life. Hmmmm.,......
So now I guess I just need to figure out what to do about that? Thanks for your comments I don't know if I would have stumbled upon this Revelation otherwise.

The question lacks a context. You have to supply what your context is: "What is the purpose of life on Earth?" or "What is the purpose of life in a high school?" or "What is the purpose of being alive?"

The question is a bit weird to me, because it is made as if it had some sort of inherent logical sense.

Life is an opportunity to make something worthwhile. It only has a purpose if we are fortunate and/or determined enough to build one.

Hi,
I’m a theist, but I believe humans are free to create their own purpose in life.

You just need to find something you enjoy doing.

For some it is raising a family. For some it is service to humanity. For others something else.

Would that entail placing value on my life as it is? What if a person doesn't want to build anything or doesn't have the motivation or determination to be something, then what?

the body produces a unique spirit on each occasion

we are here to learn all that we can before we die

the body cannot do anything else or more

Thank you! That narrows it down to two things. There are times you will have to choose whether being alive is good, and that is when you simultaneously decide the purpose of being alive. The purpose of being alive is either A. to benefit from the experiences which come with being alive, or B. it is not necessarily to benefit but merely to have experiences. The difference sounds subtle, but its about whether you decide that life is good or not, beneficial or merely something which exists. No one else can provide a context which will define it for you, with few exceptions. If you avoid the decision of whether life is good then you are making the second choice that being alive is merely for the purpose of having experiences. Its a decision that takes several forms you may not immediately recognize and is equivalent to many existential questions like "Why should I go on living?" There's no context until you decide whether life is beneficial or merely an existence. Its just one of those things that involves a perspective and may not have an ontological answer.

okay I think I understand what you're saying here, I'm pretty sure that I have already scratched out a so that leaves me with b, I guess that does at least make me more aware of where I stand however it doesn't bring me a sense of satisfaction hmmmmmm, this is starting to get a little complicated. Thanks for your honest answer this is something I'll have to think about a little more.

You're a beautiful man. Some things are just very awesome or beautiful, and we don't know why. Usually its the smaller things that have purposes and the things we have control over. I think sometimes a purpose would limit what something was, like if you wrote a song in a chaotic way that just turned out great you may not have started out with a purpose for it. If you gave it a purpose you would make it less than it was.

Finding some sort of role or activity that is rewarding and brings emotional resilience and ethical fulfillment.

What if a person doesn't want to build anything or doesn't have the motivation or determination to be something, then what?

Then, it seems to me, that person deserves a bit of attention and probably support.
