Six Muslim men sentenced to jail, fine for going to waterfall instead of Friday prayers

‘KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 1 — In what is possibly the first case in the country, six male Muslims, including three teenagers, were sentenced to a month in jail and fined over RM2,000 for skipping out on Friday prayers last August 23.’

Under its constitution, Malaysia has a dual legal system, both a general, secular legal system (modelled on that of the former British colonial power) and Sharia law. The latter is applicable only to muslims and is restricted in its powers. It seems it is this that these men have fallen foul of.

What is perhaps alarming is that this may be a sign of more puritanical enforcement of rules that apparently were not applied strictly in the past.

I've been watching the Muslims... I see them everyday, hanging out with each other, sometimes groups of 5 to 10 guys... Never any women around them, and then I see them kissing each others cheeks in the parking garage.

...Weirdos.

The French do that too, you know. It's cultural. I had to get used to male relatives of my wife's family greeting me with a kiss on the cheek. I don't mind it now.

In the US, I was disconcerted to find out it is not standard to greet women you know with a kiss on the cheek, as it is in Europe (one in the UK, two in France, and three in the Netherlands). Instead there seems to be a horrible, sexless hug.

Weirdos. :D

Ahhh yes. Bet you're referring to the "Arse-out" hug.

So you have never hung out with your male friends?

Nothing wrong with cheek kissing of a friend or family nember in greeting. It is America that is weird for not embracing this gesture of friendship.

Faire la bise in france it depends on the area. I assume the local custom varies in every country the practice is practiced ;-)

Thanks for the further layer of subtlety. I aways open the batting in France with two. But if there is a move for a third I accept with alacrity:D. French women usually smell nice, too. Can't say I've ever come across the four kiss regime, though.

Our friend is evidently forgetting his own faith includes a - highly stylised - form of kiss between men. I remember being taught the liturgical kiss of peace as an altar server. This was done by grasping the upper arms of the other person near the shoulder and moving towards them so that the chin passes over the other person's shoulder, without any contact between the heads at all.

But then again, there really ARE good reasons to think at least some Catholic priests weirdos!

Yea, it is written in the Book of Cyril...

Yep, theocracies do some crazy stuff. Be sure to remember this the next time some Christian starts talking about making secular legislation conform to religious morality.

Ive never come across the one kiss.

We have a friend from La Rochelle so four is an occasional treat

We live close to a 2/3 border so need to be aware of who we are kissing ;-)

The article indicates that this seemed to be part of a sting operation:

Citing the charge sheet, Harian Metro reported the six to have committed the Islamic offence at the Sekayu Waterfall between 1pm and 1.50pm on August 23, 2019.

The six were reportedly busted during a raid by the Terengganu Islamic Religious Affairs Department.

Its female officers had entered the recreation area first for surveillance and found the six accused to be among several people picnicking with their families at the waterfall area instead of being at the mosque for their obligatory prayers that Friday.

The male officers went in and made the arrests after Friday prayers ended, according to the daily.

You know, this might be an interesting idea for a cop show on TV. It might add some flavor to a genre which has gotten cliche and stale over the decades. A TV show called "The Terengganu Islamic Religious Affairs Department" or "TIRADe," for short.

Don't blaspheme, I said, like those with no head - no, no, don't do it
Don't do the crime, if you can't do the time - don't do it
Keep your eye on the Prophet!
Unbelievers can stuff it!

Don't do it, don't do it
