Worst things to say to somebody who is experiencing depression

Hope you're all okay and if not - wishing you a speedy recovery ...

It is hard to know what to say in some situations - I can say that from personal experience!

Anyway here is a guide to what NOT to say even if you are tempted -

When someone you care about is depressed, offering advice or wisdom may be something you do with only good intentions in mind. However, the words you use may not convey the message you want to send—especially if you don't understand the nature of depression and mental illness.

It's important to remember that depression is a medical condition that requires treatment, be it medication, therapy, or both. When you're talking to a loved one about their depression, repeating platitudes can make someone feel that you're minimizing their feelings.

When you're expressing your own feelings, the phrases you use may seem clear and "to the point" from your perspective, but the person with depression who is on the receiving end may feel attacked, misunderstood, or deeply hurt.

It's important to discuss mental health with people you care about, but if you don't use tact and compassion, your attempts to help may do more harm than good.

"I don't understand" is a condition that is easily cured. At least the person admits her/his ignorance.
"I understand" is much worse. Dunning-Kruger syndrom is persistant and almost uncureable.

During a particularly bad time in my life i have heard some real sickies

"What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.”
"Just stop thinking about it"
"But you look normal"
"It could be worse"
"Oh i understand completely"
"Are you sure you are not making it up"
"It was gods plan"

Found another excellent collection of tips for handling a loved one's battle with depression -

Using tough love can be actively harmful

But tough love is not only unhelpful in these situations, it is also actively harmful. There are many excellent reasons for discarding tough love, but here is the most important one: no one is tougher on themselves than the person fighting depression.

Here is a mild version of what goes on in a depressed person’s head: Why are you not getting up? What is wrong with you? Get up RIGHT NOW. Come on, you can do it. Goddamn it, why aren’t you doing it? Why aren’t you even trying?’

This plays in our head, on and on, for hours. And none of it works. It doesn’t work because this isn’t everyday sadness. Nobody wants to be depressed. If you feel the depressed person is being lazy or indulging themselves, consider this: nobody who is indulging themselves is desperately unhappy doing it. The depressed person is miserable through all of it. There is deep suffering.

A person becomes very vulnerable when they are depressed. Other people should understand this. When I was depressed, I felt helpless and very lonely. I had trouble sleeping. Modafinil helped me with this and this article here on the topic of health. I changed my attitude to many things. Now I enjoy life and know how to enjoy the moment!

Perhaps not helpful for those suffering from depression, but there is an element of truth to both of these - if one survives the first and the second is blatantly true for much of the time even though it might not be apparent.

Most definitely not helpful to hear when suffering depression when you know nothing could be are worse and you are wishing it had killed you or you had the courage to stand more pain while killing yourself?

As for long run, has it made be stronger? I have taken steps to avoid that same situation again, but i still doubt that it could be worse
