Why do children today not learn propper handwriting?

I've held a pen wrong horribly for my entire life.

It didn't stop me from learning shorthand effectively, doing the overwhelming majority of my education by using pen and paper and implementing it unfailingly the workplace.

I spent many years speed writing in the military, as everything that happens is recorded on paper. Lots of log writing.

Why do schoolchildren not learn propper cursive handwriting in school anymore? Why is it that everything has to happen on a computer this day? Why do teachers not teach good old writing with pen and paper anymore?

I remember when I went to primary school in the late '80s and we used hours every week learning to write handwritten essays, and had no computer to help us.
These days as a grownup man I found the love for handwriting again, and honestly, I have lost all the good ability I used to have in school. And I guess this is down to using the computer for most everything now.
I want to leave the computer writing behind and again enjoy writing with a fountain pen.

Do you handwrite still? or did you have handwriting as a class in school?
I see the future already.

Good for you.

Why rail on about "kids today" then?

They'll be perfectly fine without cursive handwriting.

They'll make it really easy for legal loopholes and binding contracts.

I guess they will just have to go back to slicing open your hand with a knife and making your thumb print in blood.

The very convenience of writing on a laptop means there is less thought in what your writing. There is a kind of brain-hand interaction that goes on when you are writing by hand that isn't quite so strong when your typing.
True, when I need to solve complex problem, I need paper to get it done. Also after writing down it's stuck in memory better than when typed on PC.

For a person it's healthy to speak how he feels, and act how he speaks, within the Law of course.

To develop Love for God, in India kids are advised to repeat mentally the name of God; japa, namasmarana (auto replay CD is not advised) and to write down the name of God (not copy/paste) and they also praise God while singing (Bhajan, Nagar Sankirtan).

So, there is also "hand - heart" interaction

If you love a girl, you want to hug her for real, you don't want this virtual:hugehug:

Over the 30 years I taught ... 1980 - 2010 it disappeared. The main problem for teachers like me was prioritizing what was important. The government, out of touch totally with reality either unintentionally, or purposely, threw so much curricula at us that we couldn't do it all. They wanted daily phys-ed, increasing skills for math, problem solving based science, basic computer stuff, and so much more. We had to drop something, and cursive handwriting was one of the first things to go. So instead of pretty sheets of handwriting we got demonstrative projects using Power Point.

I don't regret that decision for a minute.

I used to like my handwriting, but recently it looks terrible... thanks to the age of technology, I have become lazy, not only in writing. :(
Thanks for the reminder. :)
