What happens in the Senate if the House votes for impeachment?

The Senate goes into recess Dec 13, 2019 and does not reconvene until Jan 2020. The Democrats primaries start sometime in Jan. Now with a Senate trial going on what priority do you think the Senate Democrats running for President are going to do? Continue campaigning or take their seats in the Senate for however long the Senate Majority leader decides the "trial" to run?

We'll find out soon. We might also find out that campaigning, showing up to talk to supporters, is overrated. I suspect trial sound-bites on the evening news is a good replacement for living on a plane.

Well, the major front runners of the democrats are not really well supported out here. We (the West Coast) have been doing most of the heavy lifting doing the legal challenges to this administration's unconstitutional mandates and have been largely ignored, while the East Coast front runners haven't done squat about it and come around here looking for money and support.

If Trump doesn't get convicted in the Senate, and also wins reelection on top.... he still may have to deal with a Democrat Senate in 2021 (potentially).

The impeachment will reach the senate once the articles of impeachment are completed. I'm predicting the AOI will include obstruction charges from the FBI's 2016 election interference investigation.

The senate will have 2 options when we get there (results based on witness testimony)

1. Overwhelming evidence of abuse of power, senate still ignores it, the GOP will pay severely in 2020
2. Underwhelming evidence of abuse of power, senate still ignores it, the GOP will pay minimally in 2020

Evidence doesn't matter to today's GOP, they're on life support. The republican senate will continue down the road of RW media and who they get their talking points from. Rush creates the talking points from noon-3 est.of the previous days 'news' events. Later in the day Fox then uses Rush's 'angle' on things. The talking points are repeated by RW media figures constantly throughout the day

As I said in another thread that nobody is talking about...

On November 21 (4 days from now as I write this) funding ends and the government once again will shutdown. Once it shuts down it will stay shutdown until this Impeachment is concluded. So this shutdown could possibly make our last record breaking shutdown look like a cakewalk.

IMO, it'll all come down to Ambassador Sondland. If he publicly testifies that Trump personally directed him to convey to the Ukrainians that the military aid and a WH visit were contingent on them announcing investigations into the Bidens and the 2016 conspiracy theory, that presumably satisfies every serious objection the Republicans have made (it's first-hand information of Trump personally directing a quid pro quo).

The only recourse then would be for Republican Senators to argue that those things aren't impeachable offenses. I'd be very curious to see what the reaction to that would be.

Unless the GOP flips Dem Senators can ignore the trial. They will talk about it for PR and optics during the campaign but know it's a dead duck so no need to take part. Also they can just vacate their committee seats letting Dem Senators not running, or out of the running, for the 2020 election handle the trial.

Lets face it. Both parties are going to point out of partisan nature of this situation. There have been 2 members of Congress that have crossed party lines. That is it. GOP will blast the House as it is a Dem majority. Dems will blast the Senate as it is a GOP majority. It is all theater for the masses.

Some in the media have speculated on this. I think the minimal survival instinct in Congress would ensure it does not happen. But Trump? He ignores laws. He ignores good sense. I would not put it beyond him to have an epic hissy fit.

The alternative to that would be for him to say that he was making this ultimatum to the Ukrainian government without authorization from the President.

He is not going to say that.

He could pled the 5th, in which case if he is given immunity he would still have to testify honestly,

Especially now that there are multiple witnesses to a phone call between him and Trump, where Trump specifically asked about "the investigations".

Next week is going to be fascinating for sure.

How'd that work with Lois Lerner?

Also, if this impeachment reaches the Senate the six Senators running for President, including Sanders, Warren, Harris, and Kloubuchar, will be forced to leave their campaign trail in order to sit in on these hearings. This could really hurt their run.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/poli...e46d24-064c-11ea-b17d-8b867891d39d_story.html

Some Republican senators and their advisers are privately discussing whether to pressure GOP leaders to stage a lengthy impeachment trial beginning in January to scramble the Democratic presidential race — potentially keeping six contenders in Washington until the eve of the Iowa caucuses or longer.

The discussions raise a potential hazard for the six Democratic senators running for president, who had previously planned on a final sprint out of Washington before the Feb. 3 Iowa caucuses and the Feb. 11 New Hampshire primary.

Well...I guess we will get to watch Trump humiliate Biden in the General...
