Have you just bought a new expensive smart phone?

Apparently your old smart phone will be useless with 5G being rolled out as we speak.
You'll have to buy a new one and the old one will be a worthless piece of junk.

A CNET article on 5G disagrees. Or at least, suggests it may be 2021-2022 or later before 5G becomes widespread, and also cites how 4G and 5G will co-exist for quite some time.

...

T-Mobile turns on their 5G network December 6th. Real world speeds will be up to 33 times faster than 4G, starting out, but the amount of maximum data usage allowed on carrier plans, probably won't be a whole lot higher. So while the speed will be revolutionary and help online video games, 5G won't help people a ton in every way.

It will be any years before they turn of the old carrier systems so dont worry. If you dont need the speed then hang on to your old phone. You can pretty much guarantee that in a year or two there will be more enhancements and the providers will be asking you to change your phone again to take advantage.

i dont know about you but we still have "gsm" for anyone still carrying around a brick phone.

I am last in our families phone pecking order. We buy a new phone each year. The kids and hubby take turns, passing the 5 year old phone to me. It works to make phone calls so its good enough.

You aren't missing anything. I got my first smart phone a few years ago when it was on sale for $1, and the regular phone I wanted was $99. Then I started needing one for this and that, and at one point in time was carrying around two smart phones (one personal, the other work). And now I make money using one.
At least they do make for some pretty good cameras anymore. Still not as good as a DSLR camera, but some of them are good nonetheless, and you can get apps that give you all the settings of a regular camera. My current (S-7 Active) can even produce an impressive, albeit fuzzy, picture in very low lighting.

I think it's misinformation.

"By 2025, 15% of mobile connections in the world will be on 5G, according to a 2019 report by GSMA Intelligence, the research arm of the mobile operator group that hosts Mobile World Congress. But LTE usage will be about 59% by the same year, up from 43% in 2018. (In North America, the split will be more even, with about 47% of 2025's connections on 5G and 44% on 4G). Even if 5G becomes an even bigger part of the market by 2025 than estimated today, "it will complement rather than replace LTE," GSMA said in a separate report from last year."

No, 5G isn't going to make your 4G LTE phone obsolete

Ignore the scare tactics designed to get you to buy a new phone. Your 4G LTE smartphone won't be obsolete anytime soon.

It's marketing spin, not quite a scam but certainly exaggerated and brushing over any complexities. They're trying to get laymen to subscribe to their investment advice publications so they can use the same kind of dramatic and scare stories to encourage risky investments (which they'll be able to manage on your behalf for a low, low flat fee of course).

That is simply a lie, part of their spin. If they were selling 5G phones, it'd probably be considered fraudulent.

While 5G devices will offer significantly increased speeds, the 4G and even 3G networks will continue to operate and be entirely usable in the same way they always have been for the foreseeable future.

I just bought a Galaxy S10+...5G. I have to say that I love it. It will probably be the last phone I will buy, because I don't use all the bells and whistles IT has yet. I appreciate the ones I do use, a lot, though.

As for the 'pecking order,' I'm afraid that I'm the first in mine. I should feel guilty.

But I don't.

I feel no desire whatsoever to pay more money to Verizon for 5G nor to pay through the nose for a new phone.

Since 4G was good enough for my cave dwelling ancestors, it's good enough for me.

And as a bonus some say 5G will be terrible for our health. Isn't this world just great? #sarcasm

Yes, the health concerns are warranted I think. We are already losing brain cells with everyone you speak to having memory issues. (Not coincidental) This setup will apparently require a tower (transmitter?) every 300 meters so they will be everywhere and I read where no one will be able to object to one being installed outside their home due to any health concerns, so that's a bit scary.....I have also read that this technology will have some very sinister uses as well. What do we expect this close to the finale'? Here we go.....

Thanks to all for your input. It will be very interesting to see what happens with this roll out.

In the article he said that all that was missing from a 4G phone that is in a 5G phone was one tiny chip. What prevents phone repairers from installing this chip so you don't have to buy a new phone? Don't tell me....let me guess. :D

5g is well below the frequency of IR scanners and radio waves, with those themselves being below the visible light spectrum, which itself is below the minimum threshold to pose a health risk.

Yep, that is what they tell us....you can believe them if you wish....but where big money is concerned, I don't trust a thing they say.

Ask anyone if they are having memory issues or experiencing feelings of apathy......it's started already....the sinister side of technology. Wait till you see what they do with this.
