Racist trolls targeted a Somali refugee’s Maine campaign. She still pulled off a historic victory.

She had spent the past six months knocking on hundreds of doors in Lewiston, Maine, the city where she arrived as a refugee more than a decade earlier, and where she hoped to be the first Somali-American to win a seat on the city council. Suddenly, online trolls from as far away as Alabama and Mississippi were hurling vile abuse at her, telling her that Muslims had no place in American government and she should go back to where she came from.

“I just couldn’t take it,” Khalid told The Washington Post on Tuesday night. “I was crying so bad, my eyes were completely red.”

Khalid, a Democrat, was unsettled by the fact that someone had posted her address on social media. But she was also worried that the hate-fueled attacks would become a distraction. So she deleted her Facebook account, asked friends to look out for worrisome comments, and went back to pounding the streets with her leaflets and her clipboard.

On Tuesday night, she won her race by a significant margin. The victory, she told supporters, showed that “community organizers beat Internet trolls.”

I'll settle for not doxxing someone and publishing their home address online. That may become more "common" given the role of social media nowadays because the information is so accessible, but before the internet it was called "intimidation" and "harassment". People should still be able to feel safe in the privacy of their own home even when they are running for public office.

Right now, No. I don't think they should publish their addresses. It's not a good idea. The political atmosphere in the UK is such that MPs are having death threats and threats of violence. It is now (at least) a sensible precaution people are going to have to take. A decade ago, it might have been different.

Violent threats against MPs 'commonplace', report warns

Is attacking someone with racist slurs okay with you in your book then? How about attacking black candidates calling them the n word? Attacking a politician not even in your area, solely on the basis of their race is okay with you too? You don't think such suggestions are both revolting, and moronic?

Why would they do that in the first place? It's no one's business where they live. I don't need to know my governor's home address (when he's not at the Governor's Mansion). (I think Mike DeWine is a piece of crap, but he shouldn't be bothered at home.) Why are you asking stupid questions?

Not if they're based on race/religion/gender, etc. rather than on actual performance and character, no.

Nice twist attempt, though.

Show some self-respect, stop throwing neck for the party, and instead place principles first.

Uhhh...have you been paying attention over the last three years?

If you run for PUBLIC office it is everyone's business where you live. According to your thinking, it's alright not even knowing if your particular representative lives in your state or district.

So everything else is fair game, huh?

Would you like to know if he lives in your state?

They are accessible through their office, why are you so keen to put their family at risk?

I didn't ask you if Trump was a racist. That is clear and doesn't need to be asked. I asked is is okay in your book to call a political opponent racist slurs? Are you okay calling politicians of other parties that you don't like, things like the N word? Perfectly fine?

What about throwing bricks through their car windows, or smashing their faces with one? How about burning crosses on their front lawns? All that is okay with you too?

Ever heard of Judge Kavanaugh? When you run for PUBLIC OFFICE you become a very public person. If you have any doubts or fears, then stay home...

Criticizing someone for being corrupt and/or incompetent is fair. Racism, sexism, etc. isn't. It's not remotely comparable.

Sooo...is Trump a racist?
