Coming out as a Deist

That's certainly not how I would see it. First, an immense amount of what is going on around is not happening by chance or random events -- most of it can (if you could observe closely enough) be explained as effects resulting from previous causes. The formations of the galaxies, the orbits of planets and satellites, the coming and going of the tides and weather, the sheer, wonderful variety of life all around us -- these are all simply the results of long, long strings of causes-and-effect, natural events.

My point exactly thank you. Its not by chance and there is "long, long strings of causes-and-effect, natural events" 2 questions. 1) What caused all this and 2) Where did the laws that the natural events come from? I am honestly not looking for an answer but, just letting you know what comes to my mind when i see/read things like this.

But yes, chance also plays a role

Personally, i completely disagree as nothing happens by chance or randomness.

The problem with assuming that "too much is going on for all to be by chance" assumes that there must be, therefore, a "guiding hand."

Why should i automatically assume this is not the case? I like to look at all possible answers then decide instead of automatically eliminating possible answers.

Hello everyone,

I’ll try to keep this short, I have been Agnostic for as long as I can remember, over the last 2-3 years I have started seriously looking in to Atheism (which is not much) and Religions. After countless hours of talking about, watching, listening, reading and replying to debates/conversations I think I can confidentially say that I am a Deist. At the moment, I do not subscribe to any particular religion however, during this time I have eliminated some religions from the “competition” (I do not wish to go in to detail about that here) and leaning towards one but, the journey continues. With that said, I am still and always will be looking for someone to challenge my thoughts and beliefs. I am, by no means a scholar or expert on religion or science however, I would definitely welcome a 1 on 1 debate with anyone in effort to either find the “truth” or “eliminate” that which is false.

Well done, You are in the right track now. Take the next step wisely. Nowadays it is not so easy to reach the truth as machination is all over the place. facts are twisted in purpose but falsehood is legless all the time

Please see reply #6, i hope that answers your question.

Thanks
That’s fine. I think its a hard question to answer. Obviously there are claims made by the founders of various religions to represent the will of that entity and communication from the said entity to humanity. Whether or not any of those claims are true its interesting to contemplate whether a being who is more able and intelligent than us would want to communicate with us and even be of assistance. Perhaps the question then could be framed, is that being more moral than us? If he were, then it makes it somewhat more likely this being would want to communicate and assist.

Anyway I’m just interested in the questions and journey and really wish you well wherever your new insights lead you.

Amazing. You go from not knowing if there's a god to not knowing which god, with no justification.

If course it was about ethics, because there was no other reason for him to talk about the bible at all. He rejected its divine inspiration as late as his letters to William Short as late as the 1820s where he called the NT untruth and charletenism. And in 1825 reiterated that Jefferson believed jesus was not and never claimed to be incarnate of god, son of god, or sent by god. And also rejects anything Paul ever wrote, Revelations and in general mysticism and miracles described in the bible. To call him Christian without deism takes a careful quote mining only public statements, and even then giving those more weight than they deserve.

Jefferson was neither a deist or a Christian. My prior post of his quotes clearly demonstrates he believed in the supernatural God of the Bible.

Thank you, i would truly appreciate that. I am also not interested in changing your mind (or anyone else's), my goal out of this is 1) Either find out where i am wrong or 2) Possibly (and hopefully) re-affirm the stance i have taken. I heard a great quote that i love to use when it comes to debating "When i debate i either win or i learn something new, i never learn" I like to have that attitude when debating and honestly prefer the latter to the former. I have never debated on this website before and not sure how to go about it, so if you can help with this, that will be greatly appreciated. Also, i believe we should set some agreed upon rules prior to beginning this debate.

This sounds very much to my way of thinking as well.
I can set up a one on one debate (there is a specific thread) and post some ground rules there if you like. You can then just suggest any changes or different rules.

Can't do it now (at work) but let me know if you're okay with me doing that, and I can get it done later today, my time.

From my experience, I would its a first step to finding something instead the previous position i held, which was Agnosticism which was mostly saying "I or we don't know"

There is nothing wrong with "we don't know" if we don't know. Demanding that one state that there is or isn't a god could easily lead to error. By the way, most atheists are also agnostic. Just in case you get confused by the atheist label that I chose. If someone showed valid evidence for a god my mind could be changed. The ones you have to look out for are those that declare no evidence would change their minds.

Creation of the universe, Abiogensis,Origin of consciousness, How nothing can create something or anything along those lines. As stated before, i am no scholar or scientists and welcome the opportunity to learn and have no problem being corrected or educated on any subject.

I have spent many years on this subject. I found this way of thinking about God in the following video to be the best I have found:

Especially the part where the author talks about Apophatic theology:

I would rather say "Be fearless" and investigate all. Trust and follow your own conscience.

Fear and seeing ghost, devils, satans all around will only inhibit you and your spiritual growth (of course only temporary, so even about this you need not worry).

Being humble is a good starting point to "Learn"

Debate works maybe good to learn about Science, but Religion Spirituality is all about "Unlearn" in my experience.

... in effort to either find the “truth” or “eliminate” that which is false.

“eliminate”: They call it also neti...neti. It's a 24/7 job, never ending I guess.

“truth”: You might "find" your "truth". Finding "The Truth" is a Big One

Good Luck with it, and more important "enjoy", although I heard a Master once say "End Joy" is the key to ....

Hi
First i would eliminate any religion or worldview that allows evil to exist forever as an intrinsic driver of the whole system, which pretty much eliminates the "eastern" religions.
The next criteria i would look to would be in the areas of violence, nationalism and political meddling. Any religion or group within a religion that engages in any of those activities i would eliminate from the competition as well. Which pretty much discounts the major strains of Christendom, the Bahia and Islam as a whole.
I would also eliminate any religion that modifies its teachings to fit in with a changing society in order to keep its members or appear relevant.
There's a start.

You're on the way! The great apologist C.S. Lewis went from atheist to deist to Christian leader. Good luck in your search for ultimate truth.
