Star Wars vs Lord of the Rings

Although the starwars movies were really pretty poo they are nevertheless an interesting take on the good vs evil scenario.

The LOTR films are very well produced installments of the same scenario but rather than using the vastness of space as its backdrop it uses a long walk.

Ahh but where would Game of Thrones be without Lord of the Rings for a layout? As much as I do like GOT, I mean come on. The first time I encountered it I was like
"Oh a More politically charged LotR. Interesting."

I bought the first 3 books, (before the others came out). Slogged thought the first, thought the second may be better and got about 1/4 the way through before giving up and sending them to a charity shop.

On the understanding that the book is always better than the film (or tv series) i never bothered watching it?

Meh...high fantasy isn't really my thing...at least not anymore. I'd prefer even lower fantasy, but until they turn any of Abercrombie's books into a movie...

I liked the books. I'm not an uber fan, but I figured we were rolling with big budget fantasy representations.

Oof that's sacrilege in the circles I run in :D
In saying that, I haven't dabbled in High Fantasy since Brent Weeks. It's all hoity toity snooty classics and non fiction at the moment for me. But I'm having a rather nostalgic pull as of late. I want some Star Wars and I wants some Tolkien. I thought it'd be fun to see the two golden boys duke it out, as it were ;)

Isn't GoT just the popular edition of actual history regarding all the monarchies, despots, and various nefarious folk who have contributed (good/bad/whatever) to our current state - with a few untruths. Well I never, and I always thought history was just so accurate.

PS Only seen the first season or so of GoT. (fortunately - and LOTR wins, for me)

Lord of the Rings is in an unusual position for me. I loved the films but really don't care for the books. Normally I find that films, while they may be good in their own right, generally fall short of the books they were based on. The Hobbit is truer to form here, loved the book but found the films pretty abysmal.

Star Wars is a case where I have some nostalgia for the originals since I watched them as a kid. I haven't felt the urge to watch them again as an adult though and haven't bothered at all with the newest ones.

So, got to give this one to Lord of the Rings really.

Come now, ladies and gentlemen!

You know this is merely squabbling over the silver medal.

There is one true winner. Harry Potter, take a bow!
I love HP don't get me wrong. But LotR is epicness on a scale unprecedented. Prove me wrong.

You make a strong case for silver there. I take nothing away from scale or sense of epic; but then, Tom Riddle was after the world too.

But JKR has that stunning gift of knitting elaborate and gorgeous plots seamlessly, and offhand I can't think of a single joke told by Gandalf, Frodo, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli .. why, not even Sauron or Shelob or the Balrog was up for a quip. And at least Harry got a pash under the mistletoe.

And if a clincher's still needed, well, I'm not aware of a fanfiction for Tolkien anything like the quality of Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality. (No, I'm not quite sure why that's relevant either, but it all goes on the scale.)
