Indian charitable organizations?

Sirona

Hindu Wannabe
Namaste,

time and again I've been thinking about sending some donations to a charitable organization which helps poverty-stricken people in India but I have to admit that I just don't know enough about India for knowing which organization I should choose. If I gave the money to ISKCON they'd probably use it for printing books. I once gave money to UNICEF but they just offer to donate the money for the region of "South East Asia" in general which is a bit too broad to me. In case of no other possibilities there's aways a Christian charitable organization that runs a project in India but I'd prefer a charitable organization with a background that is either Hindu or secular.

My vote definitely goes to: Seva Bharati - Wikipedia

"Seva Bharati (Hindi: सेवा भारती) is a non-governmental organization (NGO) working among the economically weaker sections of Indian society, including tribal and indigenous communities. It also works among urban slum dwellers and resettlement colonies by introducing welfare and social service programs, such as free medical assistance, free education, and vocational training. It runs about 160,000 activities throughout the year in 602 districts."

This is a part of RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangha), the parent organization of the ruling BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party), for which Prime Minister Narendra Modi has worked for 61 years out of 69 years of his life. There can be no stronger Hindus than them.
Edit: Like Vinayaka say in the post below, I too trust this organization completely.

My sampradaya manages a collective fund, and some of them directly support orphanages or widow homes. I trust it completely in terms of the money actually going to where it says it is. The list of funds is here:
