Popular Beliefs About Hell That Aren't Actually In The Bible

Now, this sort of thinking makes a hell of a lot more sense (pun fully intended :D) than pulpit pounding Bible banging harangues about eternal burning in a lake of fire.

Tawk amongst yah selves.

- hellfire, souls screaming in torment, and gruesome demons - cannot be found in the Bible.
Jesus does speak of furnaces, fires, and burning, he does say there will be wailing, weeping, and gnashing of teeth, and while technically "gruesome demons" isn't in there, those who follow and rebelled with Satan too are cast into a lake of fire. And even the article mentions they are contradictions, and it doesn't neglect to mention certain parts of the Bible that does contradict the article claims.

The popular idea of hell was introduced by the 14th century poet, Dante Alighieri and 15th century painter Hieronymus Bosch. Sure it exists in the bible but nothing like as scary as a comedy poem and some artwork.

You know there’s a video game based on the (rather questionable) anime adaption. You play as muscly ripped Crusader Dante in his quest to save beautiful Beatrice after you are unfaithful to her during battle. Satan drags her down as per his deal with her and you must Devil May Cry it through the layers of hell. Oddly still with Virgil as your guide. Though Dante doesn’t fanboy nearly as much.
It’s actually rather hilarious if you know the poem.

That tries to make religion stupid through a lack of understanding of the metaphors...

For example: Satan means an accuser, and devil means a slanderer, these do rule over Hell metaphorically, as there are tons of mockers, and scoffers in Hell.
However, the truth is that the Old Testament contains zero mentions of hell. There are some passing references to "sheol" and "Gehenna," but those concepts have little in common with the Christian hell.
If we study the Hebrew texts, the Pit is a place below Sheol:

Isaiah 14:15 Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol, to the depths of the pit.

Proverbs 1:12 Let’s swallow them up alive like Sheol, and whole, like those who go down into the pit.

Isaiah 38:18 For Sheol can’t praise you. Death can’t celebrate you. Those who go down into the pit can’t hope for your truth.

The Bible Says Hell is a Place Located Under the Earth: An Atheists' Myth

In my opinion. :innocent:

Although i have worked on video games i have never actually played on any. Just not my thing but a game based of Inferno does sound like it could be fun?

It's noteworthy to point out the New Testament is completely contradictory to the Old Testament description.

Like in Luke 16:24.

How the flame in fire pit/lake got started, is pretty interesting. It's obviously been an added on narrative after the Jewish scriptures.

The New Testament is completely contradictory to that.

Like in Luke 16:24.
The understanding of these things contradicts:

Deuteronomy 32:22 For a fire is kindled in my anger, that burns to the lowest Sheol, devours the earth with its increase, and sets the foundations of the mountains on fire.

Whereas the Saints shall pass through this coming Baptism of Fire.

In my opinion. :innocent:

The dead are actually dead. Hell is the grave....no one is alive if they are dead.....duh. You can’t be punished unless you are alive. o_O

It’s fine for a Devil May Cry rip off. The fun is probably mostly derived from being a book nerd.
Although the anime adaption is....umm a thing. It was made by several animation studios so Dante and indeed Virgil go through some drastic design changes throughout. At first I thought they’d switch it up for each level, which would have been interesting, but alas.
