You know, I used to be one myself. Was an active member of a faith, miracle healing, prosperity church for almost 10 years. bleh. Now, I can see how it really misses the point of what Jesus was saying.
The idea that they teach of Jesus having been a materially rich man who wants you to be materially rich, and getting that way by funneling large sums of money to some preacher goes directly against Jesus teachings. For example:
Matthew 6:19-21 King James Version (KJV)
19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
Or this when those charlatans say that Jesus was rich;
Luke 9:58 King James Version (KJV)
58 And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath nowhere to lay his head.
