Australian PM invites religious leader to White House...

Yup. I figure (understandably) that it would be a pretty minor story in the States.
Actually, it seems quite strange. Trump is notorious to having those of faith to come to the White House. He even has a religious advisory council.

Maybe it is gossip?

No...I'm guessing, since as far as I know the White House didn't provide a rationale, but the Pastor in question is under investigation over the handling of a pedophile priest (his father).

My best guess is the White House was aware of this, and saw no reason to take a risk in terms of perception, or how that might play out.

I'm guessing though, in terms of the motive.

Could be... didn't that happen back in 1999? Under the Assemblies of God and not under Brian Houston? And didn't his dad die in 2004?

Yep.
If you're interested, there are some links on some of my posts in this thread.
The investigation into Brian Houston is current, and in simple terms relates to his actions after his father admitted to being a pedophile to him.

At times, Houston has asserted that his father was then removed from the church in terms of preaching, etc, but video evidence to the contrary has come to light.

There are also some questions and inconsistencies around what a church leaders responsibilities are in a legal sense at the time of the alleged offences, since Australia's mandatory reporting laws covered schools and hospitals, not churches.

To be clear, I'm not asserting Brian Houston is guilty of anything (in this thread, at least). But he is under active investigation for actions he took (and didn't take) when he became aware a crime was committed.
I could see the White House being wary of him for that reason(again, not because he's guilty, but because he's under investigation). But that is speculation on my part.

One more thing, @KenS , just in terms of explaining the timing, etc. There was a Royal Commission into Child Sex Abuse, and the responses of different institutions to allegations and victims.
Lots of reasons for that, but the fact that previous 'investigations' in the Catholic Church had been chaired by Cardinal George Pell (who was the third ranking Catholic globally at the time, and is now a convicted child abuser) led to a determination that an independent commission was needed.
Because of that, there are a LOT of historical cases coming to light and being investigated in Australia now.
