The power of the Affect - Trump and the Keep American Great Rally

Thanks - very interesting video addressing the complex question the acceptance of whatever Trump says even when it is clearly wrong. He addresses the repetitive phrasing that Trump uses which can be completely false becomes accepted we repeated over and over again. Appreciate you finding it.

You are welcome.

This scholar has come to this conclusion based on decades of work in the cognitive sciences. He has studied how the brain builds concepts using metaphors and how it builds interconnected "frames" in which those concepts are organized. So you can bet that he brings lots of science to the table on this matter.

Trump is also clearly a classic case of narcissism.

I think that’s because we are packbonding primates.
The signal that ‘everyone else’ feels or believes something is a powerful trigger.

That is why crowds affect people’s personalities so radically. If a charismatic speaker with some understanding of these dynamics can effectively create and leverage that sense of ‘we’, it is group bonding, genetically coded behaviour, which does the rest.
That's the "bandwagon" propaganda technique. This technique is used very often by RW media.

Bandwagon is a technique or a psychological theory explaining how individuals choose an opinion or side not in accordance with their own beliefs or values, but with what the general crowd believes and values. Because it is the propensity of humans to not be an outsider, people tend to follow the majority and the new trends. Basically, bandwagon can be explained in one phrase: “Because everyone else is doing it, so should I!"

Many of us are disinclined to think that psychology has
reached the level that physics had in victorian times.

No particular fault of the psychologists; it is harder
than physics.

We are also disinclined to take seriously the remote-
viewing psychiatry of people on the internet.

THAT SAID, I figure if T is not a narcissist, then I
am a plumber from Hackensack NJ :D

Despite what that revolting haggis slurpin sawb from Michigan
thinks.

Yeah, psychology is a hard sell. But it deserves more credit than it often receives.

I can promise people an eye-opening dream interpretation with my own personal knowledge of dream interpretation.

Deserves both more, and less, depending.

I actually understand what propaganda is and how to recognize it.

terrif. Be sure to let us know when you develop a
reliable metric to show that your opinion about who
does now much of what is actually fact based.

The Keep America Great should wake us up to the importance of the affective aspect of the brain and how powerful it is when it can override the cognitive brain.
And even override even the most basic Judeo-Christian morals as we've seen. Since when are crowds yelling "Lock her up!" (thus assuming Hillary was guilty) and "Send them back!" (they're all U.S. citizens) moral under both Judeo-Christian standards ("bearing false witness") and also America's "rule of law"? I wonder how many of those who were yelling such would then go to church on Sunday and think that they're really being a believer in Jesus?

I would suggest that there's all too often a very serious "disconnect" involved.

The importance is to recognize in ourselves that we may pride ourselves our intellectual ability and think that our cerebral cortex is in full control but we are driven by subcortical and our emotional pathways. The cerebral brain exerts its influence but it is not in full control. I listened to the rally and comprehended the false statements but felt fear and rage at what was said (obviously I am not a Trump supporter). I even felt some nausea in my stomach and an elevation in my heart rate. Yes my cerebral cortex finally repressed these feelings but it was the emotional response as much as the cognitive response that initiated me to write this thread. Think about most religious experiences and how much the are felt with emotional responses rather than intellectually rationalized. Thus as you point out our subcortical response can override Cognitive response and make new associations which we then believe even if it is not congruent with what our religion teaches us. Just think about the phenomena of islamaphobia and how it is counter to Christian beliefs.

Just calling it "Islamophobia" is an example of manipulation.

I saw a clip today from one of his rallies. He told the adoring sheeples that Hunter Biden made $1,500,000,000 ($1.5 Billion) from a deal in China.

No one in the crowd questioned it. They all nodded their little heads and mouthed how bad Hunter was.

I really think many believe Trump is the Second Coming.

Did he say that is what HB made, or that was what
was transferred to his investment company?

Does ya got the quote?

It was a brief clip on CNN or CBS. Best recollection is:
"Hunter Biden got 1.5 Billion dollars from a China deal."

Just found this...

The allegations about Hunter Biden’s business dealings in China, explained
"The Biden family was PAID OFF, pure and simple!" Trump tweeted Sunday, echoing an accusation raised by Giuliani -- even if the facts suggest otherwise. Trump added on Twitter that Hunter Biden "got 1.5 Billion Dollars from Chinadespite no experience and for no apparent reason. There is NO WAY these can be legitimate transactions?"

No need to over complicate it. You can just take my word for it.

So he actually did not say HB made 1.5 B.

Best to be careful with choice of words, it can
make a huge difference.
