I Owe RFers an Apology

Several weeks ago, I was informed by a person I trusted -- and who I had never been given reason not to trust -- that an overwhelming weight of science-based evidence had been amassed to the effect that the vast majority of Trump voters were primarily motivated by racism in voting for Trump. I was further told that the science was pretty much settled on the issue.

I passed that information along to Rfers in a thread on the subject.

Yesterday, I learned from the same person that there is new and emerging evidence to the effect that, while a large number of Trump supporters were most likely motivated by racism, "a significant percentage of Trump voters show no evidence of having been motivated by racism in voting for Trump". In short, the science on the subject is still unsettled, despite that I was told it was settled.

Consequently, I owe you all an apology for passing along misinformation on such an important topic.

I think the pivotal factor is that "a large number of Trump supporters were most likely motivated by racism". That itself tilts the scale. Playing to the baser emotions of the majority is relatively an easy task. We are witnessing this in India too.

We know that welfare measures have costs. We know that it is difficult to manage so-called racial differences. But a person (or a party) that openly professes its allegiance to the causes of the majority and the rich is appealing to the baser instincts (inevitably present in societies).

I do not think you understand what is motivating the Trump cultists. People who voted for Trump are voting for an anti-establishment candidate. Essentially, the carefully crafted propaganda message Trump was conveying was, "Vote for me and you are saying eff you to both parties." This message is wildly successful. People really hate the ruling class of both parties.

If Trump doesn't get impeached then Trump is a shoe-in to win. However, Trump really stuck his foot down his own throat with the Ukraine thing. There's only so many laws you can break before impeachment becomes real. He admitted he broke the law and incriminated himself several times on TV. Trump is his own worse enemy.

Apology accepted now don't do it again ;-)

Back to reality... you show both bravery and honesty in coming forward with this. But not sure it matters really, whether there is, or is not any science behind the accusation, his tweets are there for all to see and there is considerable evidence of his attitude in his speeches, and actions.

That's my opinion as well. Hilary represented the establishment to voters who wanted a change. That's why Warren not Biden has a better chance with the independents once she becomes better known.

Wanna take a bet you're wrong? I have high confidence Trump will be impeached in the House and he'll resign. If he doesn't resign and is allowed to be lawless by the senate, he still won't win. The American people will toss him out in the election.

Trump's primary slogan was "Make America Great Again," which had a great deal of appeal to paleo-conservatives and those who consider themselves "patriots." It hearkens to the "good old days," back when we were kids - or thinking of the times of our parents and grandparents when America was in a state of ascendency and becoming stronger, ultimately reaching the peak of superpower status.

But as we also know, this earlier America associated with the "good old days" also had a great deal of racism and social injustice - which came part of the package.

There was a lot of "bad" during the "good old days," but people tend to only think about the "good" and not the "bad." That may have been on the minds of many Trump supporters. They wanted to make America great again, like it used to be, but they were thinking more in nostalgic, idyllic terms, and not how it really was. They would deny the suggestion that they're racists, and they probably genuinely believe that they're not.

Yep. Another propaganda technique. This is an emotional trigger.

Are you ok Sunstone? Have you been taken hostage by Trumpsters? Have they bound you to a chair and forced you to watch Fox and Friends 24/7 as a form of indoctrination and torture as you writhe in Fox-induced agony? Should we get a SWAT team and send for backup?

(On a more serious note; good for you for being responsible and owning up to an error of judgement. You're setting a good example for us all to follow. :) )

I wish we could meet face to face. I'd be glad to bet a sizable amount of money that Donald would never resign. He is far too much of a narcissist for that.

He'd resign like Nixon did. He's worried about his legacy.
