Walnuts

It's walnut season, those delightful treats are falling from the trees in abundance and are ready to harvest.

You must be careful of course that you do not stray onto private property while gathering the nuts and your head is full of date and walnut cake or waldorf salad.

The harvest can be collected freely from public areas, roads that run alongside walnut groves where overhanging branches have dropped their fruit. Some councils plant walnut trees to border car parks, public squares or lining avenues and some just grow wild.

An afternoon walk can bring you home with such bounty. However, as i have just discovered it is important to know the difference between a walnut and dog poo.

Walnuts are disgusting.

Don't they use some machine to apply the right amount of pressure?

Not that i know of. There is a big cerno co-operative about 10km from us. Tree owners deliver (and get paid). The co-op then puts them in sacks, delivers them to local workers. Collects them when shelled and vacuum packs them.

European.

Just looked on Amazon, i can buy black walnuts from Germany, tinned for €19 for 130gms ($21 for about 4.5 ounces). Or pickled a little cheaper.
I thought so. They source that I found for American black walnuts was about a quarter of the price that you cited, but after all they do grow here naturally. Roughly € 30 for one kilogram for shelled black walnuts here. Hmm, maybe I should get in th import/export business.
