Say 'illegal alien' in New York City, and you could pay a $250K fine

I put this in the political threads because IMO it is political. I think it's crazy that you can now be fined for threatening to call immigration.

It is now illegal to threaten to call the immigration authorities on an undocumented person or to refer to said person as an “illegal alien” in New York City.

The city’s Commission on Human Rights issued a 29-page directive last week explaining the new rules, which apply to workplaces, public accommodations, and housing. The punishment for violations includes fines of up to $250,000 per offense, according to the New York Post. But here’s the catch: To take action against a so-called perpetrator, the city must first prove his or her actions were motivated by hate.

From the New York Post article:

“An Indian immigrant family complains to their landlord about mold and cockroaches in their unit. The landlord tells them to ‘just deal with it’ and threatens to call ICE if they file a complaint in housing court,” reads another.

It is not illegal to call ICE, it is illegal to threaten to call ICE when dealing with others. You can't get tenants to shut up about illegal living conditions by threatening to call ICE on them if they don't stop complaining. In other words, using the threat of calling the cops is illegal. It is still perfectly legal to call the cops.

This is just the beginning. The left has ushered in an age of thought policing and this is just proof of that.

Did you miss the OP. It clearly says "It is now illegal to threaten to call the immigration authorities on an undocumented person "

Why would you THREATEN to report a person as an illegal alien? That looks like BLACKMAIL to me.

If you want to report a person, then rep[ort them, don't try to blackmail them. And..... 'No', your worry that this could one day prevent folks from calling the police is just strange.

Left, right.. There really isn't much difference. They both only care for themselves, are corrupt and are full of BS.

Meh the right at least isn't trying to fine people for using the wrong words at least. That's a huge red flag.

I agree. Either do it or don't do it. Threatening to do it is looking for something else in return.

Every politician ends up worth more than 100x than what their salary is. Isn't that red flag enough?

I don't really car how rich they wind up if they don't infringe on my liberties, you know like being able to say words without being fined/jailed..

I think it's sad that you can't see why such threats should be illegal. Also, the title of this link is absurdly misrepresenting the law.

What's next? Be fined for calling the cops on a burglar? After all illegal is illegal.
It isn’t being made illegal to call the authorities on an illegal immigrant. That example is about a threat to call the authorities on an immigrant family (who may or may not be illegal) for personal gain. That would be the equivalent of threatening to call the police on the burglar unless they give you a cut.

Never trust a tabloid hack to honestly and accurately interpret technical criminal legislation.

That's right; it did. You repeated the lie from the article.

I'm willing to assume that you didn't know it was a lie, so repeating it doesn't reflect of your character... yet.

(Though the fact that you'd consider the Washington Examiner a reliable source of news may reflect on your judgment)

But now that it's been pointed out to you that this was a lie, you have two choices:

- retract what you said, or
- continue to repeat the lie, but now knowingly.

The choice is yours. This choice will reflect on your character.

Certainly, one must be wary of tabloids.
But there's often a problem when a news item would make liberals look
illiberal, ie, left leaning sources don't report on it so much. So googling
for alternative sources, one finds either paywalls (eg, Wa Post, NY Times),
tabloids, or rightish sources.

Here are more sources (a couple pages into a search)....
New York City Declares Using the Term 'Illegal Alien' Can Result in a $250,000 Fine
New York City bans term 'illegal alien,' institutes fines up to $250K

As I read the law, it's about workplace & public accommodation speech.
This is already heavily regulated speech....as a MI landlord, my own is
even more strictly regulated. What's new in the NYC law are hefty fines,
& application to co-workers.

Correct. You can still freely report anyone to ICE that you want to in New York City. It is when used the possibility of calling ICE as a threat that one has broken the law.
