Does a decent salt substitute exist?

Its the sodium that is the problem, there are several sodium free or low sodium substitutes.

Personally i use very little salt in cooking and only put it on the table for guests. I think food doesnt need it if prepared well

There is caution when choosing a salt substitute if you are taking medication for hypertension.

Also there are salts which taste a lot stronger than sodium chloride, so you can use a lot less for the same affect.

Another alternative is potassium chloride (over the more common sodium chloride) which survives cooking.

One should be aware that potassium chloride is not without health risks as well.

"Salt substitutes usually contain potassium chloride, which does not raise blood pressure as sodium chloride (table salt) does. It should, however, be used with caution in those with kidney disease, heart failure or on blood pressure or heart medications that increase potassium levels."

Are nonsodium salts healthier than traditional?

Good to know.

Is that allowed? Can they put msg in it without reporting it on the label?

The product called Accent is pure free msg, and you can use it as a salt in some ways. It doesn't taste like salt but has some salty qualities. I have a bottle of this but rarely use it. Its possible that free msg could be bad for health. People debate that, and so I tend not to use it. Curiosity got me to buy it.

Recommendations?

There is adaptability in everyone. If you eat everything without salt, it won't taste right at first. Keep eating it without salt anyway and in 6 months to a year, it will not taste right with salt.

Personally, I do not salt anything. I know one can not live without salt. On the other hand, I get plenty with those few processed foods I do eat.

How is that weight? Being correct to maybe a little lightweight can eliminate so many of the heath problems so many people are having today. Find a good nutritionist. Set the goal. Life can get better.

To those interested in trying it there is also celery powder which you make yourself by dehydrating and then grinding celery. It isn't a salt or a preservative but can have some of the same impact of bringing flavors out of food.
