Nobody really knows the exact figures and if they claim they do, they're lying to you.

I think that has much more to do with politics than it does with nature and the environment.
I do not believe global hunger is increasing at present, but the loose of cropland is a progressing issue.
I consider the accelerated increase in the arid zones between the arid regions of the world and the major cropland regions of the world. This most significant in Africa, China and the USA.
The world has already achieved “peak child” and the population will soon stabilize. There are sufficient resources, including food, to handle the projected stable population to come. While there may be some manageable issues between now and the turn of he century when the population stabilizes, over population is not going to be a long term problem.

Except in terms of environmental impact.
Only countries with excess capital have the means of cleaning up the environment. Poorer countries will employ the cheapest fuels and disregard pollution until their own population demands environmental improvements.

Agreed, and actual environmental impact of humanity is the proper guage of over population, and we have passed the threshhold of over population. It is myth that population will stop growing at the present level, but when population levels reach the critical mass it will level off and possibly drop due to catastrophic environmental deterioration.

Population dynamics is a whole field of study in biology.
But like water pollution that can be revduced to a single
number in a given system and understood by
one with the right background, the answer to your q can
be reduced to one word- sustainability
At present these are problems, but not new. The elephant in the room is the rapidly deteriorating environment, and the diversity of species.
