Why do we "fight" over faith and belief?

Why do we humans fight over faith and belief? Yes, there are many Religions who tell the slightly different ways of understanding the truth of our existence. But it seems to me that because we have different religions we can not be happy for others who see the truth differently the what we do.

What if we instead started to work together to find common ground in our belief and where we "disagree" we would say ok that is no problem.

And even within the same religious teachings we often see "fights" of who is right or wrong.

May the answer be as simple that we are all on different wisdom level of the spiritual teachings? So even we all see some part of the truth, none of us actually see the full truth, and this makes us protective of our own belief and faith?

Maybe we have come to a point where we start listening to others and stop being so "obsessed" with "MY BELIEF IS THE ONLY TRUTH AND YOU ARE WRONG"

I find the truth within all spiritual teachings, but I chose to follow Buddha Sakyamuni, That does not mean other teachings are wrong.

There are so many routes up the mountain of consciousness, we are all climbing the dimensions to the peak, every rock can be handled differently by each of us...

Problem comes at the face, most don't know how to climb any higher; so because many are there sitting waiting, they get mad at others who are all cramped in the same space of the 5th dimension...
May the answer be as simple that we are all on different wisdom level of the spiritual teachings?
The other part is that people don't like being told they're wrong or even corrected now a days, as we're all entitled to our opinion:

If someone has taken a spiritual belief (mind), and applied their heart (trust/faith) into it, they then become attached to the idea of letting it go...

Thus if we pull the idea from under them, they generally fall over, as the rug (tapestry) of belief is their foundation; which then causes them to reach out, generally hitting the person putting it forward in the process...

It is natural mathematics, object hits object, some energy is travelled forward and some back in return.

In my opinion. :innocent:

I've been debating religions for many years (since 2008). I've learned that most people are not "living-out" their faith at all.

...Those who argue about the rules, and the ways are still in the early stages of their development, and some people never get past that.

*What* we believe is not half as important as *living* our faith in real time.

And for most people, the previous post will fly right over their head. Hopefully one day it will sink in, and they will adopt it as their own idea.

Sometimes, things can be semantics. Technicalites of the words your using, [definition, and not much 'real' difference.

I think we are afraid of being wrong. Of seeing ourselves as not knowing the truth of things. It makes us vulnerable, and aware of our vulnerability. And we don't like that. We want to imagine that we are in charge, and in control. That we know what's going on and how to handle it. We humans also have an instinct for mutual cooperation. But we create and sustain our own social groups by shunning other social groups. And those other groups then become our competitors, and our perceived enemies. Ideologies become a handy excuse for blaming and attacking other groups for our own group's benefit, because their differing ideologies represent their 'otherness', and their 'wrongness', to us.

I can relate to what you write here :)

We rarely fight over faith and belief. Religion is just the excuse for the fight. The real motives are hidden.

When you say we rarely fight over faith and belief how come it always fights between the religions to be the one with the TRUTH. In my experience, I see the truth in all of the religion/spiritual life.
An example can be some (far from all) Christians almost get mad when someone state that the Christian God is not the only one with a true teaching.
I think it is a bit like @PureX said it we are afraid of being wrong

I agree entirely. There are so many paths and such religious diversity. When we truly our faith it is a joy to meet and fellowship with peoples of other faiths. The Baha’i Faith teaches when two people argue about religion they are both wrong.

But for those that do...ego.

Who fights the most: those who choose not to see, and then strike out in every direction to find their way or those who choose to see, and then share it...

Would say only one is fighting, the other is trying to help.

Most, if not all, Christian denominations base their beliefs and faith on the teaching of Scripture. So the arguments come from disagreeing on what the Scripture is actually teaching and therefore what one is supposed to believe.

What I've learned is that most denominations bring their own ideas into Scripture. For example, the Scripture never says man has an immortal soul yet that is what denominations teach.

We? Lots of folks don't, admirably.

I don't see any need whatsoever to find common ground. That dilutes each faith. Instead of that, why not just respect the diversity for what it is. Look at others as fellow humans, and leave it at that. Trying to find common ground causes a lot of trouble, because often it just isn't there, and one side changes the other side, just to 'find common ground'. It's easier to accept an orange as being just as wonderful as an apple.

I don't see any value in defining yourself along lines of faith or religion. There is really only one (spiritual) path and not many. Those who fight over faith or religion do not yet realize this (enough).
