Recently I've been considering Proverbs 15:8 and Proverbs 28:9. In the latter scripture it says prayer can be turned in to an abomination (sin) if we turn our ear from the law of Yahweh. This is a horrible possibility, that our very prayers could be turned in to sin simply for not listening to aspects of Yahweh's Law. Often people pray to petition Yahweh to do something for them, or praise Yahweh or ask for forgiveness. To think that ones very prayers could be turned in to a negative thing whereby we might receive judgement is terrifying.
The reason I write this post is that I know of someone who uses this scripture to justify not praying, because they consider themselves to have turned their ear from the law at one point or another in their lives. In other words, they fear Yahweh: - they fear this scripture being applied to them. I've not really heard of anyone else doing something like this. I know about scriptures admonishing us to pray such as 'pray without ceasing' but if someone has judged themselves as wicked, how should I convince them to start praying again.
The person in question is still trying to observe the law and observe it better than before, they simply won't do anything that offers a sacrifice to Yahweh i.e prayer (Psalm 141:2), or even sing to Yahweh (Hebrews 13:15).
I recall when King David saw that angel in mid-heaven with a sword drawn in his hand it says in 1 Chronicles 21:30 "But David could not go before it [the tabernacle of Yahweh] to inquire of Elohim; because he was afraid of the sword of the angel of Elohim". In 2 Chronicles 27:2, another king, Jotham, who did what was right in the eyes of Yahweh, would not enter the Temple of Yahweh. These instances show that people feared Yahweh. They feared doing something good because they didn't consider themselves worthy enough, or they feared being judged. This is the same attitude the individual in question has.
What are your thoughts about this situation and what would you advise him if you could?
