The USA has had a large military airbase on Greenland since after WW2. However it has no territorial rights. It seems that there have been Danish/Norwegian settlers on Greenland since at least the Tenth Century. It is not Certain that there were any permanent residents of any sort before that.

Inuit people are the majority, Terry. Descendants of Scandinavian settlers are a minority. 88% Inuit, including some who also have European descent. Danish as a first language is very much in the minority, over 80% speak one of the Greenlandic dialects first, although in Nuuk lots of Inuit and Euro Greenlanders are Danish-speakers first.

I am sure that is true today.
Though I am less sure about the past.the Innuit people lived and travelled throughout the artic region and were nomadic. There is little evidence that they were living in Greenland in any numbers or as permanent residents before the Scandinavians arrived. At one time when Greenland saw more fertile times, the Vikings settled in large numbers, only leaving when the climate changed again. After Norway and Denmark split. Both claimed part or all of Greenland. The Danish right to it was only confirmed since WW2. since then the Innuit population has grown. And the scandinavian numbers fallen.

I would suggest that the real OWNERS of Greenland are the residents. Not Denmark and certainly not the USA. It would seem that as a result of global warming,. Greenland is going to be very valuable indeed, and will not need the financial support of any other nation.

It seems that the Thule culture and Dorset culture, which had come in from present-day Canada, were there when the first Norse settlers came in. Those settlements died out, the Thule remained, and are the predecessors to the present-day Inuit.

If that is the case, then Denmark should do away with the facade of autonomy and take control of the government and instead give Greenland a good government (like what we have done in Kashmir. Bad Government, no autonomy). In many countries, copper mines are sold after independence. So, if Greenland would not be sold outright, it could be mortgaged for money. I know, it is a bad bad world.
The reason we don't is because Greenland desires to have home rule, which I understand. What I find absurd and assume pisses off people from Greenland is how Trump speaks of them, like they are a piece of property that you can just buy and sell as you please. Because it makes them look like they have no nationality, culture or important history, but rather they are just some random people living on some land. To me I would understand if that would make them feel rather angry at Trump.

Trump isn't smart enough to understand that..

Christendom is largely built on that attitude. It's called colonialism.

Perhaps what Trump means by "Make America Great Again" is a return to the 19th century.
Nobody has ever explained what he actually meant by that.

Greenland has a much longer history than The USA. Even Danish occupation is longer than that.

The general opinion of him in Denmark is that he is a complete loon and a joke... And I really hope for the Americans that they manage to put someone else in charge.

"Make America great again" I think refer to when Trump is replaced :p

I think he is doing more harm to the reputation of the US than pretty much all other former presidents combined. I can only imagine Putin laughing himself to sleep each night.. couldn't really have been much better for him.

And also I feel a bit sad for the more enlightened Americans, that they have to put up with this idiot. But at the same time I think it shows that they have some serious problems. When you can have pretty much all highly educated people in a country warning and opposing a candidate and still its possible for him to get elected.

To me this seems to indicate that the difference between educational quality and knowledge within a country is in dire straits and need some serious improvement.

If I were living there, I would be greatly concerned for the future, not so much because of Trump, he is what he is, but when looking how ones country developer over time and compare it to how the rest of the world is doing. Especially in the field of science.

A quarter of Americans surveyed could not correctly answer that the Earth revolves around the sun and not the other way around, according to a report out Friday from the National Science Foundation.

The survey of 2,200 people in the United States was conducted by the NSF in 2012 and released on Friday at an annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science meeting in Chicago.

To the question "Does the Earth go around the Sun, or does the Sun go around the Earth," 26 percent of those surveyed answered incorrectly.

In the same survey, just 39 percent answered correctly (true) that "The universe began with a huge explosion" and only 48 percent said "Human beings, as we know them today, developed from earlier species of animals."

Just over half understood that antibiotics are not effective against viruses.

As alarming as some of those deficits in science knowledge might appear, Americans fared better on several of the questions than similar, but older surveys of their Chinese and European counterparts.

Only 66 percent of people in a 2005 European Union poll answered the basic astronomy question correctly. However, both China and the EU fared significantly better (66 percent and 70 percent, respectively) on the question about human evolution.

In a survey compiled by the National Opinion Research Center from various sources, Americans seemed to generally support science research and expressed the greatest interest in new medical discoveries and local school issues related to science. They were least interested in space exploration, agricultural developments and international and foreign policy issues related to science.
------------------

I would really like to see the individual answers per country for the EU when it comes to whether the sun evolves around Earth or the other way around, I really don't hope that the Danish people didn't answer this correct. Then I would be highly embarrassed :D

The difference between Donald Trump and Greenland is that Greenland is not for sale.

I love how we are framing it like Greenland is a piece of fruit on the shelf.

I swear listening to Trump speak is like listening to a dementia patient.

Greenland provides more access to the Arctic which counters Russia's claims to the area and the resource there. You are out of the loop, nothing more. The same reason the US holds on to islands in the Pacific that have no economic benefits like Guam. Beside this idea is actually very old dating back to the time the US was buying land from France, Spain and Russia. The last attempt was in 45/46

By the description given in the topic, they are not doing well socially, IMHO, Denmark needs to take cognizance of that.

Russia control's more of the Artic sea area, than all other nations. Were it not for the USA acquiring Alaska they would have no claim at all.
Canada has by far the largest claim by a western country, followed by Denmark, The USA comes a poor third.
If Greenland became an american state, even combined, it would not match Canada.
It is difficult to know at this stage where the greatest riches lay.
